All current students at LJMU automatically become student members of the Students' Union when they enrol with the University, although you may decide to opt out of membership.

There are 2 types of membership within the Students' Union. Most of you will fall under the category of Student Members. We've explained them below.

Student Member

Who is this?

A Student Member is someone who is enrolled on a programme of study at LJMU, provided they have not opted out of membership.*

*Any student on a leave of absence, suspended pending disciplinary investigation, suspended by their professional body (meaning they are unable to study), or expelled from the University does not hold current student status at that time.

What can they do?

• Attend, vote, speak, and propose amendments to motions at Student Forums and All Student Members meetings.
• Vote in any Union election or referendum, with exceptions outlined in the Membership Byelaw.
• Stand as a candidate in Union elections, except where outlined in the Membership Byelaw.
• Request information regarding JMSU as outlined in the Membership Byelaw.
• Apply to join all Student Groups registered with the Union and participate in activities organised by the Union, subject to any eligibility criteria.

Opt Out Member

What can they do?

Opt Out Members are entitled to make use of the services provided by the Union.

What can't they do?

• Attend, vote, speak, and propose amendments to motions at Student Forums and All Student Members meetings.
• Vote in any Union election or referenda.
• Stand as a candidate in Union elections, including committees of Student Groups.
• Request information regarding JMSU as outlined in the Membership Byelaw.
• Participate in British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) or student events and competitions.

Student Members and Opt Out Members are required to adhere to the Union's Code of Conduct, as outlined in the Code of Conduct and Disciplinaries Byelaw at all times. Failure to do so may result in membership being removed.

Membership entitlements are also codified in the Students' Union Code of Practice.

Opt Out

Students have the right to opt out of Student Membership by giving written notice to the Union or via My LJMU (Manage Your LiverpoolSU Membership). If a student decides to opt out, they will cease to be a Student Member for the remainder of the current academic year.

Information Sharing

As a Student Member, LJMU automatically passes some of your personal information to us. We will only use that information for running the Students' Union and communicating with you about its activities, for example, to enable you to participate in elections and keep you informed about opportunities available to you as an LJMU student.
