Working with us gives the cliché ‘no two days are the same’ a whole new meaning. We’re a small but mighty team, and we put our students at the heart of everything we do – whether it’s planning events, helping to develop campaigns, providing them with opportunities to make friends and learn something new, and everything in between.
Belong. Be Heard. Thrive.
Thank you for taking the time to explore working with JMSU.
We’re here to make sure every LJMU student feels a part of something so that they belong, that they are heard, and that they can thrive. That’s what drives us, and that’s why the work our staff do matters so much.
We don’t just run sports, deliver events or campaigns, we aim to create space for students to lead, connect, speak up and shape their own experience. And none of that happens without a brilliant, committed staff team behind it.
We’re proud of what we do, and we know the difference we can make. But we also know that students, and staff, are facing real pressures. The cost of living, wellbeing challenges, juggling work and study… these things aren’t background noise. They're real, and we do our best to respond with compassion and integrity.
That goes for our staff too. We’re building a workplace, built on the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion where people feel respected and supported. Our team tells us they value the balance we offer, the culture we nurture, and the freedom to be themselves. We’re not perfect, but we’re trying to do the right things, and I believe it shows in how we work together.
A few years ago, we moved into the Student Life Building, right at the heart of campus, and our partnership with LJMU is stronger than ever. We’re realistic about future challenges, but we’re optimistic too, because we’ve got a clear sense of purpose, and the students and staff to deliver it.
If that sounds like something you want to be part of, we’d love to hear from you.
Warm wishes,
Paul Chapman
Chief Executive, JMSU
We're dedicated to building a diverse and inclusive workplace. We're proud to be a welcoming, friendly and inclusive team and want all our people to feel comfortable and confident to be themselves and feel they belong.
We have more work to do to achieve this. It's important that students can see themselves reflected in our staff team and so we are particuarly encouraging applications from LGBTQ+ and ethnically diverse candidates who are currently under-represented within our core staff team.
We know applicants from ethnically diverse backgrounds may have experienced additional barriers when applying for a new role. We are taking positive action to address an under-representation in our core staff team.
We're offering internal and external candidates from ethnically diverse backgrounds a guaranteed interview where they meet the essential criteria for the role.
To secure an interview you must meet the essential minimum criteria for the role as outlined in the job description. Please take time to evidence this in your application form, giving examples where possible. Clearly outline how you can achieve any gaps within a realistic timeframe.
To be considered under this scheme you must select the relevant tick box in section 1 (Personal Details) of the application form. By doing this you are giving consent for us to disclose that you are from an ethnically diverse background, if necessary. Please note this information (Section 1) will still be removed prior to the initialscreening process, however schould the panel agree that you meet the essential criteria, you will then be guaranteed an interview and the information may be shared with the panel to enable this.
If you do not select this box and provide consent, we will be unable to guarantee you an interview even if your application demonstrates you met the essential criteria. Your application will be considered alongside all other applications. The final selection decision following the interview will be based on the most suitable candidate for the role regardless of background or protected characteristics.
People and Culture Manager
Having spent most of my career in the public sector, working at JMSU was a huge change for me, but I haven’t regretted a moment.
It’s a fast-paced environment, but equally it’s relaxed and there is always lots of activity going on and fun to be had. The staff team challenge themselves to be innovative and give their best, and they are all so engaged and passionate about their roles and what they deliver to our students. It’s a real privilege to support, and be part of, the JMSU team.
