Accessibility Statement

JMSU is committed to creating an accessible, inclusive, and welcoming environment for all students, staff, volunteers, visitors, and community members.

We want everyone to be able to participate fully in student life, activities, representation, services, meetings, campaigns, and events regardless of disability, long-term health condition, neurodiversity, mental health, communication need, cultural background, gender identity, race, religion, age, or socioeconomic circumstance.

Accessibility is part of our wider commitment to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) and to ensuring all students feel they belong, are heard, and can thrive within our community.

You can read more about our commitment to inclusion and equality in our EDI work here - Inclusion Hub @ Liverpool John Moores University Students' Union

Accessibility in Our Spaces and Activities

JMSU aims to make our spaces, services, and activities as accessible as possible. We encourage all staff, student leaders, societies, sports teams, volunteers, and event organisers to actively consider accessibility and inclusion when planning activities and engaging with students.

This may include:

  • Choosing accessible venues wherever possible
  • Considering step-free access and accessible facilities
  • Providing clear event information in advance
  • Considering sensory, cultural, dietary, and wellbeing needs
  • Using inclusive language and communication methods
  • Offering flexibility in participation where possible
  • Creating respectful and welcoming environments for all attendees

We recognise that accessibility is not only physical access. It also includes communication, confidence, financial barriers, sensory environments, and ensuring students feel safe and included in our spaces.

Events & Student Groups

JMSU expects all student-led activities and events to uphold the values of dignity, respect, inclusion, and safety.

Our event planning guidance and health and safety processes encourage organisers to:

  • Assess barriers to participation
  • Consider accessibility requirements early in planning
  • Communicate adjustments clearly
  • Promote inclusive participation across all activities

Where appropriate, JMSU and event organisers will ask attendees if they have any accessibility requirements or adjustments that may support their participation. We encourage students to share any needs in advance so we can make reasonable adjustments wherever possible.

Student Group Responsibilities

You can find more information about student group responsibilities here and event guidance here.

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

JMSU is committed to creating an environment free from discrimination, harassment, bullying, and exclusionary behaviour.

We are committed to:

  • Supporting equal access to opportunities and services
  • Promoting diverse student representation and participation
  • Creating a culture of respect and belonging
  • Making reasonable adjustments wherever possible
  • Continually improving accessibility and inclusion practices

Our approach aligns with our wider Equity, Diversity and Inclusion commitments and supports our aim of ensuring all students can engage fully in Union life.

JMSU is also committed to improving the accessibility and usability of our website and digital services. We aim to ensure online information can be accessed by as many users as possible, including those using assistive technologies.

Feedback & Continuous Improvement

Accessibility is an ongoing process, and JMSU is committed to continually reviewing and improving our services, activities, communications, and environments.
