Our university year was unfortunately cut short due to the pandemic, which sadly stopped our girls from completing their annual charity fundraiser. When we all returned home, we decided that the fundraiser would still go ahead. We planned to walk, run and cycle the entire length of the UK to raise as much money as possible for two amazing charities, as well as for our own team. Ataxia UK and MenACWY (Meningits Now) were our chosen charities, picked specifically by myself and another team member both in memory of two very special and dear friends.

The girls able to take part were split into two groups. One group would complete their given miles the first week and the second group, the next. We all had a total of 38 miles each to complete in order to equal the length of the UK which is 874 miles altogether. Our journey started on June 1st, the first group did their total miles until the second group stepped in on the 8th to complete their weeks worth. Everyone had their own methods and preferred ways of completing their miles, whether it was running, cycling, jogging or slowly walking them, they worked as hard as possible every day. We would always update each other on the group chat with our total miles of the day as well as pictures of where we had been, sweaty selfies or screenshots of our routes and stats. We were all scattered across the UK with many in the North and some also in the South, including: Wales, Northern Ireland, Cumbria, Manchester, Liverpool and more. So everyone has different landscapes, routes and weather! Our journeys were shared on social media daily, displaying the pictures we had taken with an update on the money we had raised.

The donations tallied up fast during the first week and our target of £1000 was in sight. Our fundraiser ended on the 14th of June and we had completed well over 874 miles. The target was reached but also beaten as we raised £1100 altogether! We donated £800 between our two lovely charities and the remainder was put away for the team next year, which we are so grateful for. We were also really grateful for any donation big or small as well as the kind messages of support that came with them. The girls had the best time and throughout were so supportive of each other, our team work was the strongest it had ever been despite not being able to see each other. Ataxia UK sent us a supporter pack which will be shared amongst the girls when we see each other again. Our journey was also shared on their pages, which we were so grateful for and very suprised to see.

We look forward to our next fundraiser and hopefully we will all be together again soon! Until next time...
