This morning several LJMU University students spent some time with Ugandan Midwives, overseas in Liverpool for a few weeks on an international placement.
The students gave the miwives a tour of their local trust site, Liverpool Women's NHS Foundation Trust and introduced them to many of the staff on duty. The midwives got to see how midwifery is different in the UK compared to Uganda as well as learn about the structure of the NHS and the job role of a midwife in the UK.
The students also gained a valuable insight into the life of a Ugandan midwife and how different it is.
We had a great time getting to know the women and learned how variable their job role is; not only are they caring for women during their pregnancy but they also work as nurses for the neonates and children and in the fields of gynaecology! We really enjoyed our morning and are hoping to keep contact with the midwives in the future!
Here are some pictures of Harriet and I with the midwives after we finished our tour. We've even received invitations to go see the midwives in their places of work in Uganda so watch this space, and if anyone wants any more information on doing an elective placement there please let us know!
