To mark Baby Loss Awareness week the LJMU Midwifery Society hosted a study day on Bereavement for student midwives and aspiring student midwives in the Liverpool Area.
Over 40 students attended to hear from Charities 4Louis and Liverpool Sands who came to inform the attendees on the work they do with families who have suffered a bereavement through still birth or neonatal death. Guests also heard first hand from parents who themselves tragically lost their baby, and learned the best way to communicate with families in these circumstances. Annmaria, a RM and RN who runs the recurrent miscarriage clinic at Liverpool Women's NHS Foundation Trust also gave the students vital information on compassion and how to communicate bad news to parents as well as giving them the professional perspective of infant loss.
Event co-ordinator Ela Yuregir said "As midwifery students and midwives we may have to work with families who have suffered an infant loss whether through miscarriage, stillbirth or neonatal death. We wanted to put on a study day to help inform our practice about all aspects of bereavement so we could give optimum care. Having a range of speakers who gave professional insight into bereavement and hearing from families who had personal experience of infant loss gave us a broad perspective of the complex issues involved. Furthermore proceeds from our bake sale and tickets will be donated to 4Louis, Sands Liverpool and The Miscarriage Association as a thank you to our speakers, enabling a positive outcome from our event"
We would like to thank all the speakers for sharing their stories and experties.
