About Our Group |
Shotokan Karate is one of the four oldest styles of karate. It differs from other styles as it involves long, deep stances and powerful long-range techniques. For a number of years, there had not been a Shotokan Karate Club at John Moores but due to a number of high-ranking black belts and British squad members attending the university over the last few years, the club was restarted. As a city, Liverpool is a hub of Shotokan Karate in the UK and across the world and is highly regarded across the Karate Union of Great Britain community. We are open to all abilities, ranging from those that have never studied any form of martial art to students entering university with a black belt in the style, and even those that studied different martial arts before joining the club. The club can provide numerous opportunities to compete throughout the year including local, regional, and national championships, having seen many of our members win medals at these events. There may also be the opportunity to compete against other universities in the form of British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) competitions and the annual Liverpool Varsity event against our rivals at the University of Liverpool. Since being formed the LJMU Karate club has been continuously growing each year, seeing more and more people joining, grading, and taking part in competitions, as well as helping us to get comfortable wins over UoL each year at varsity. As well as training, competitions, and gradings we host regular social events and outings to allow members to get to know each other. |
Key Information (When, Where, and How Often We Meet) |
We train twice weekly during term time in the new LJMU Sports Centre on Copperas Hill, on Mondays 6pm - 7pm and Thursdays 7pm - 9pm. Another perk of this membership to the LJMU Karate Club is a year-long membership with the Kirkby SKU, a club well known across the country for training British, European, and World champions. You will be welcome to any of their sessions across the week at a 50% discount for each class. For your first taster sessions simply wear whatever sports clothing you are comfortable wearing, then if you decide to stay with us a white Gi (uniform) can be bought later. It is also recommended that you bring a decently sized water bottle. |
Why Should You Join Us? |
Liverpool John Moores Karate Club can provide you not only with a fantastic way to become fit, gain confidence, and learn self-defense in a safe and friendly atmosphere, but can give you an opportunity to meet new people. The club has been home to several members of the British Karate squad. Our club’s instructor has trained multiple members of the British team and European champions who attend his other classes. The club provides the opportunity to progress through the ranks and long-standing members can hope to achieve their black belts whilst studying at university. The club also has a fantastic social scene. The current members are a lot of fun to be around and host regular events and night-outs, which help build friendships that last beyond university. So if you are looking for a university experience like no other, be sure to sign up today! |
