Karate is a disciplined and energising martial art that blends striking, blocking, and self-defence techniques. Rooted in tradition, it develops strength, balance, and mental focus, transforming every movement into a chance to grow physically and mentally. Whether you're executing a powerful kick, a swift punch, or mastering forms (kata), Karate is all about precision, control, and confidence.
Our Karate club welcomes everyone — whether you're stepping onto the mat for the first time or refining years of training. You’ll improve your fitness, learn authentic techniques, and build resilience in a respectful, supportive environment. We train regularly under skilled instructors, offering structured classes that progress from basic fundamentals to advanced drills. Beyond training, our community thrives through shared goals, belt promotions, and plenty of social events — from dojo dinners to group seminars.
Come discover your potential — it’s more than a sport, it’s a journey of growth, strength, and shared purpose.

Shotokan Karate is one of the four oldest and most respected styles of karate, known for its powerful long-range techniques and deep, grounded stances. At Liverpool John Moores University, our club was revived thanks to a wave of high-ranking black belts and British squad members who have brought their expertise and passion to campus. Liverpool itself is a recognised centre for Shotokan Karate in the UK and internationally, making it the ideal place to train. Our club welcomes students of all abilities, whether you’ve never tried martial arts before, are switching styles, or already hold a black belt. As a member, you’ll have the chance to compete in local, regional, and national competitions, as well as represent the university at BUCS and the annual Varsity match against the University of Liverpool. Alongside structured training and grading, we also enjoy regular socials to help members relax and form friendships off the mat.
We train during term time on Mondays from 6:00 to 7:00 pm and Thursdays from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the LJMU Sports Centre on Copperas Hill. Membership to our club also includes a year-long discounted membership with Kirkby SKU, a nationally recognised club that trains British, European, and World champions. This gives you the chance to attend additional sessions throughout the week at half the price. For your first taster sessions, you just need to wear comfortable sports clothes and bring a water bottle. If you decide to stay on, you can purchase a white Gi through the club or on your own.
Joining the LJMU Shotokan Karate Club is a great way to improve your fitness, build self-confidence, and learn practical self-defence—all in a friendly and supportive environment. With access to top-level coaching and a pathway to progress through the belts, dedicated members can even work toward earning their black belt while at university. Our instructor has a strong history of training British and European champions, and our club has already produced medal-winning competitors. Beyond the dojo, our welcoming and lively social scene ensures that you’ll quickly feel part of the community and make lasting friendships. Whether you’re looking to try something new or take your training to the next level, our club offers a university experience that’s both rewarding and unforgettable.
Each sports club is led by a student committee responsible for running the club, organising activities, and representing members. The committee is chaired by the Club Captain, with support from other elected roles.
