Happy 2023! As we wind down from the festive period and welcome in the New Year, it is important to remind ourselves of all the exceptional events that have taken place over this semester. We want to celebrate the hard work and dedication that all Sports and Societies have placed into planning and attending different activities in term one.
From 16th January memberships for sports and societies will be discounted up to 50% off – come along to our Refreshers Fair on the 18th January to find out more!
With over 35 new societies being set up, and over 3,000 members overall this year, they’ve set the standards high this year as records have been broken. We welcomed over 10,000 individuals during the Freshers Period, and lots of societies welcomed new members.
Our societies took many opportunities to make a difference to their communities and the wider LJMU community around them in term one, ensuring their voices were heard and important messages were shouted out about. Many of our Sports and Societies for participating in Black History Month, for example our Walking Society joined us in the Anti-Slavery Day walk around Liverpool. and World Mental Health Day saw our Mental Health Society take the stand and produce an amazing stall talking about what their society offers. The Vegetarian Society enlightened students on the importance of trying to be plant-based on World Vegan Day, LJMU Survivors handed out words of affirmation for World Kindness Day, FemSoc and the Red Cross Society collected donations for charities on the lead up to Christmas and our Faith societies joined us in celebrating Inter Faith Week.
As well as highlighting all the excellent events that the societies have been involved in, JMSU would also like to congratulate those sportsmen and women who have been participating within weekly BUCS leagues and tournaments. We recognise the hard work that sporting teams and individuals have been placing into their practice and we would like to spotlight a few successes that they have had! Over 2,000 members and over 50 teams we are striving for success.
Our sports teams grouped together and participated in our annual Movember campaign, raising money and awareness for men’s mental health. Boxing, Cricket, Golf, Hockey, Handball and Rugby Union (to name just a few) collectively raised over £7,000!
Teams have had many wins during their BUCs tournaments. Special mentions are as follows: Women’s Lacrosse (2) winning 8-7 against Sheffield, Men’s football (1) 4-3 vs Durham, Women’s Badminton (1) 7-1 vs Lancaster and Men’s Rugby League (1) 34-6 vs Leeds. Over 18 different student groups have had a visit from VP Activities Clodagh throughout her manifesto campaign, to encourage inclusivity within sports and societies. From RIDE to Psychology, Women’s Rugby Union to Golf, student communities have welcomed Clodagh and other students to their teams, educating them on the ethos of their society, ensuring engagement and inclusion was at the heart of every session.
Clodagh told us: ‘The committees and members were all very welcoming and made the experience highly enjoyable! I have really enjoyed term one of Challenge Clodagh, and it has made me even more excited for the next! Bring on Challenge Clodagh Term two’.
