Hi, I’m Jasmine, your JMSU President. It’s been amazing getting to meet so many of you at our freshers events in September. This years Freshers Fair was our biggest and best yet with thousands of you coming to the Exhibition Centre. Last month also saw me attend LIPA Freshers Fair, where 9 of our JMSU sports/societies had the opportunity to increase their society membership.

My presence as President

One of our Officer Team aims this year is to be present across all the different campuses and this month, we’ve been at Tithebarn for the Mental Health Day fair and our first Pop-Up Union! It’s been lovely to visit all the campuses and meet new students. Whilst we’re on the topic of branching out, I’ve also attended some of our JMSU society socials. If you aren't part of a sport or society group yet, I would really recommend joining one and giving it a go! I attended the Jazz society's first ever social on the 2nd November and it was great to see a few of you come along. The society even saw some LIPA students join, which means our efforts to push collaboration between the two universities is really starting to take off. I’m so excited about what future collaborations with LIPA will have in store. I’ve also collaborated with Feminist society, Survivors, and LIPA itself to provide students with free period products in all their campus bathrooms. It’s so amazing to see the amount of support our students are giving to LIPA and I’m honoured to be a part of this massively important campaign.

If you’d like to get involved with this campaign please do get in touch so we can campaign for the importance of intergrating JMSU benefits that LIPA students can utilise.

Campaigns

Diabetes Awareness Day - Join me and the rest of the JMSU team as we commemorate Diabetes Awareness Day. Diabetes UK North will be talking about what they do as an organisation, I’ll be sharing my story and there’ll be plenty of games, freebies, and refreshments. If you would like to come along, there are free tickets available on the JMSU website. This is part of my manifesto point on supporting students with hidden disabilities. As a student with a hidden disability myself, (Type 1 Diabetes) it’s super important to me to help other students in similar positions to me and to provide a support system that prevents students from going through any of the difficult situations I had to go through. I found that a lack of understanding about hidden disabilities and how they can affect our day-to-day lives meant I was often not getting the help and support that I needed to be able to work efficiently and stay well. Next semester, I’m hoping to host an art exhibition on the theme of hidden disabilities so that our voices can be heard by everyone in the university. My work with Diabetes UK has led to me attending their Diabetes is Serious event at the Museum of Liverpool on the 17th November. Here I will be representing the student and education sector to make sure our voices are heard.

'Light up a Life' volunteering opportunity - Looking for a Christmassy volunteering opportunity? I've been working closely with St John’s Hospice in the Wirral to provide students with the chance to be a volunteer at their Light up a Life event in December. Through this opportunity, you get to give back to the local community (a big part of my manifesto) whilst also improving you CV by racking up volunteering hours. Families of those who have been in the care of the hospice can dedicate a light on the hospice tree and the Light up a Life event is where these lights get switched on. Keep your eyes peeled for when this opportunity becomes available to book onto.

I hope to see you all at an event soon, give me a follow on social media to keep up to date with what I'm getting up to!
