Survivors Society is a student-led community at LJMU designed to provide a compassionate

and inclusive space for anyone navigating trauma, healing, or emotional hardship — or simply wanting to support someone who is. It’s not therapy or counselling — it’s peer connection, understanding, and community care built on respect, empathy, and solidarity.

About Us

The Survivors Society is a safe, student-run space created for individuals who may have experienced mental, physical, or sexual trauma — as well as for those who want to support a friend, raise awareness, or educate themselves around these issues. At its heart, our society exists to offer warmth, connection, and consistent support in a non-judgmental environment.

We host weekly socials aimed at building a strong sense of community and trust, from casual hangouts to interactive group activities. Alongside these, we hold monthly support-focused meetings where members can come to listen, reflect, share, or simply just be — there is never any pressure to speak or disclose anything personal. These gatherings are gentle, student-focused spaces where healing happens at your own pace.

Our activities range from movie nights and café catch-ups to walks, workshops, guest speakers, quizzes, and more. No two weeks are the same, but our ethos never changes: we’re here to support each other. Membership is entirely free, and we welcome everyone regardless of gender, background, or identity.

Our main platform is Instagram (@ljmusurvivors), where we regularly post updates about events, meetings, and resources. We also run a private WhatsApp group for ongoing communication and check-ins between members. Whether you’re looking for support, friendship, or just somewhere to belong, we hope you'll feel at home here.

Key Information

We meet multiple times a month for both relaxed socials and our monthly support sessions. These monthly meetings take place in calm, accessible spaces like the Student Life Building or Aldham Robarts Library, offering a peaceful atmosphere for open discussion, quiet reflection, or light-hearted activities.

Socials are held throughout the month at various locations across Liverpool — whether it’s a café, a park, a quiz night, or even a game of crazy golf. Each one is designed with inclusivity and comfort in mind. Exact times, dates, and venues are always shared on our Instagram page, so make sure to follow @ljmusurvivors for all the latest updates. If you'd like to join the WhatsApp group chat, simply drop us a message and we’ll get you connected.

Why Us?

Survivors Society offers something unique: a student-led alternative to traditional university support services. We know that it can be difficult to speak to counsellors, report experiences, or even identify what support you need. That’s why we’ve created a space where peer understanding and compassion come first.

This is a society where you can simply listen, learn, or support a friend — there is never any expectation to speak about your own experiences unless you want to. We recognise that healing looks different for everyone, and we tailor our community around your comfort and pace.

Most of all, we’re here so that no one feels alone. Whether you're in crisis, processing something quietly, or simply passionate about supporting others — you are welcome. If there’s ever anything we can do to make your experience easier or more comfortable, please don’t hesitate to reach out to a member of our committee. We are always happy to listen, and we truly care.

Committee

Each society is led by a student committee responsible for running the society, organising activities, and representing its members. The committee is chaired by the Society President, with support from other elected roles.
