National days are quite often ocassions to celebrate human interaction and activity across the world. International Day of Friendship was proclaimed in 2011 by the United Nations General Assembly to celebrate inspiring stories between communities, cultures and countries; bonded by loyalty, solidarity and friendship. Having a support system around you is an important way of life, and knowing how and where to get that support system can sometimes be trial and error. Wanting to find likeminded people that are on your wave length, that you can build long lasting relationships with, is what human nature is all about.

It's no different at university. To transition into Higher Education means you come here to learn and progress in your professional career, but this is only part of the bargain. Gaining friendships, new interests and making memories is what's on offer, too.

Here are some of the ways we can help shape your university experience by building friendships:

Join a Society group

We offer over 100 different societies here at JMSU. If you're looking for a fun hobby, want to challenge yourself, find likeminded people like you, push your academic limits or just want to try out something new - societies are the groups for you. Our societies vary from gaming and recreational to culture and faith, musical and performance groups to academic, political and sustainability. And, yes, we do have a Taylor Swift society. So take a look at our ever-long list of fun, extra curricular society groups - you will definitely find the right people for you.

Become a member of Team LJMU

Team LJMU represents all the sports teams here at JMSU. We have many sports teams - you can expect to see teams like Badminton, Rugby, Dance, Mixed Martial Arts, Football, Cheerleading and so many more. Team LJMU provides the opportunities for students who have pursued a hobby their whole lives and want to cary on at university, as well as students who have never done a sport before - and want to try it out for the first time. There is plenty of room for any student, of any age, of any ability to join a sports team. You can compete in nationa competitions such as BUCS, or you can simply play for fun. Check them out on our website now, and follow them on social media for any updates!

Get involved in one of our Student Communities

At LJMU, we welcome over 27,000 students from across the world. We are proud to be an inclusive, diverse and community-led organisation. This is why we offer our students the ability to create student communities - to find likeminded people like themselves that want to create friendships for life. We offer a platform for students to become part of a community they feel most aligned with, and encourage student communities to interact and discover new and exciting things with JMSU. Students have set up communities such as Ethnically Diverse, Disabled and Neurodiverse, Estranged and Care students, Inter Faith students, International students, Irish and Northern Irish students, LGBTQIA+ students, Mature students, Postgraduate students and Women students. You can find out more on our student communities web page.

At JMSU, we are very much student-led. This means that we offer platforms to students for them to create their own groups, or give them the opportunity to adopt a ready made group that sadly lost it's commitee members. To start up your own student group, or to have a look at the adoption list of student groups, please feel free to get in touch.

We love that our student groups are the foundations that help build friendships, we love seeing student relationships evolve over time. You can join a student group today as we celebrate the all-important International Day of Friendship.
