Terms and Conditions (Activities)

The following relates to memberships of sports and societies and other membership groups on our website and any associated merchandise.

Students groups are run by students for students and all democratically run. Prior to signing up to a Sports Club or Society, speak to the Committee to find out what your membership includes and if there are any further expenses throughout the year.

All Sports Club or Society members can expect to receive:-

  • The opportunity to attend regular meetings, events, activities, trips, and socials as arranged.
  • The opportunity to stand for a committee position or vote in their elections (Liverpool John Moores students only).
  • For Sports Club – to attend regular training sessions and have the opportunity to be selected for the teams.

When joining a sports club or society you are agreeing to abide by the constitution, general rules, regulations, and policies of John Moores Students’ Union and also the Sports Club or Society Code of Conduct which sets out the level of behavior & discipline expected of all Sport Club & Society members.

Activity groups (including sports and societies) are not permitted to carry out initiation ceremonies either on or off University premises.

An initiation ceremony is an event in which members (often new members) of the sport/society are expected to perform a task or tasks as a means of gaining credibility, status, or entry within that sport/society. This may involve peer pressure (though not explicitly) exerted on students and may compromise a person’s inherent dignity as a person by forcing or requiring an individual to drink alcohol, eat mixtures of various foodstuff, nudity, and behaviour that may be deemed humiliating.

All students are actively encouraged to report any experience of initiations to studentgroups@ljmu.ac.uk or through BUCS anonymous reporting tool. Please note all reports are treated as confidential.

John Moores Students' Union provides a Personal Accident Policy for members of SU Sports Club and Societies. The policy is the Essential level. If you have been in an accident as part of your group activity, please contact the Students' Union Opportunities & Development Team with the date of the incident, your name, the location of the incident, and the club you are a member of so they can locate the relevant accident report form.

Please find the Summary of Cover for the 2023/24 academic year here. Please note that we provide the Essential cover.

It's the member’s responsibility to inform the sports club or society committee of any relevant medical condition or previous injuries that John Moores Students’ Union should be aware of that may affect your safe participation in the activity.
