Do you have ideas for your society but are worried about the cost? JMSU has a 6K pot of money available to share with societies this year! Please read this quick guide for ideas, inspiration, and info on funding.
Which groups are eligible for funding?
This opportunity is currently for Societies only. So if you are a committee member within a JMSU Society you are eligible to put in a funding request!
Please see the end of this guide for a shortlist on the types of things we are able to fund.
How much funding can we ask for?
Groups are welcome to submit a request for any amount of funding but within reason!
JMSU has roughly 6k to share across around 70 societies. So far we have supported groups with amounts up to £200. We have also been able to provide smaller costs, such as £30 or £60 for materials or prizes.
We encourage you to get imaginative with your sessions- and if you think something is worth it for your members, tell us! Sell your ideas and we’ll see what is possible!
Is funding based on how many members we have?
At JMSU we focus on being inclusive and taking into account the individual needs of every group. You are absolutely welcome to submit a request no matter how many members you have!
We understand bigger groups might need more funding for a session to be worthwhile and really have a benefit for members. If you are a smaller group please don’t be put off! Why not ask for support with funding and promo as a great way to try and get more members?

Funding Application for Societies
When will we hear if funding has been approved?
We will aim to respond within 5 working days of your request for funding. Someone from the JMSU activities team will be in touch with you to let you know as soon as we have a decision.
For this reason please try to give us a minimum of 2 weeks’ notice before any sessions you have in mind.
We’re interested in funding, but what can we use it for?
Here is a list of some ideas and previous uses of JMSU Society funding, you can use this list for some inspiration and we’re always welcome to new ideas.
You may want to do a poll, or ask your members for suggestions for funding as well!
- Live session with a special guest or speaker (Q&As, meet and greet, discussing topics, etc)
- Creative supplies for sessions involving arts or crafts
- Items for cooking, baking, or tasting sessions
- Prizes for society challenges or competitions
- An interactive activity session such as yoga, dance or Pilates
- A subscription to a service or a package that your group could make use of
- Materials for a themed social e.g games
- Equipment for indoor activities or fitness challenges
At the moment we are encouraging groups to spend money on sessions that benefit members by getting involved and promoting activity. We are therefore focusing on things societies can use together, as opposed to items such as merchandise!
Please note that JMSU is unable to approve funding for any requests that include alcohol.
