Mysa Peer Mentor

Details Hide[-]

Are you passionate about supporting people living with disordered eating?

Mysa is an 8 week programme of 1:1 CBT based peer support, tailored for anybody aged 18+ living with disordered eating of any kind. As a mentor, you will support Mysa members through our new evidence-based peer support programme, tailored specifically to people living with disordered eating. The programme has been designed alongside members to ensure we are providing the support that’s needed.

You don’t need any qualifications or experience to be a great mentor, just a desire to help people! We will provide full training and continuous support throughout your time with us. There is no need to be an expert in disordered eating, or to have any personal lived experience of this topic to be a great Mysa mentor. All that is required is empathy, active listening skills, and a passion for supporting others, as full training and ongoing supervision from the team is provided.

What are we looking for in a mentor?

  • Someone passionate about supporting people with disordered eating
  • Commitment of 1 hour per week for 8 weeks
  • Ability to travel to the Bloom Building in Birkenhead for sessions
  • Non-judgemental and a good listener
  • Over 21
  • No personal experience of an ED is needed
  • If you do have personal experience of an ED, please look over our recovery criteria

Recovery criteria:
We ask that mentors have been in stable recovery from disordered eating (we define recovery as having a life mostly unaffected by eating disorder behaviours) for at least one year, have not sought treatment during this period, and are not currently accessing a support group for eating disorders.
If eating disorder thoughts are still present, we would expect that these are recognised, and coping strategies are in place to combat these. If you would like some clarity around this, or have any questions, please contact rachelhewlett@opendoorcharity.com.

This volunteering opportunity is also available as part of our student placement menu, offering upwards from 24 placement hours with the possibility of volunteering in other services to increase hours. For more information about our student placement offers, email our volunteer manager Caitlin via caitlin@opendoorcharity.com.
