The Environmental Sustainability and Energy Team at LJMU are working on a number of workstreams, including carbon and energy, biodiversity, waste, and travel, among others. Volunteering with the team not only supports LJMU to reach its objectives for environmental sustainability, but will provide learning experiences and opportunities to make a positive impact on campus and in the local community.
Join LJMU Environmental Sustainability and Energy Team and SUEZ, our waste contractor, as we conduct our annual waste audit!
Waste audits are a key activity conducted in the environmental sector and this is a great opportunity to gain some practical experience that can be added to your CV! Letters of reference that can be used to demonstrate what you did will be provided for all volunteers who complete the audit.
Our waste contractor, SUEZ, will also be joining us for the audit and can answer any questions about the waste management sector and how LJMU's waste is managed for anyone interested.
What is a waste audit?
A waste audit is an activity that helps to identify what is going into waste streams and if there are any opportunities for improvement. For this audit, we will be looking at:
Waste audits can be used to identify what waste streams and bin provision is needed in different areas, and to improve communications and signage where items are frequently going into the incorrect waste streams.
Time and place
The audit will take place on Friday 20th March from 10am to 3pm, although we may finish earlier. This includes time for lunch. The audit will take place in G.09 in James Parsons Building at Byrom Street.
Lunch
We will be providing lunch vouchers for all volunteers that can be used in our Core Cafes.
What do I need?
We will have all equipment needed so you don't need to bring anything.
What should I wear?
You will spend a lot of time standing so please wear comfortable clothing and shoes. We will provide protective suits and shoe covers as a precaution so you don't get dirty!
What will I have to do?
On the day we will be opening bags of waste and recording what is included. We will be recording any common items that we find and if there is any contamination, for example, recycling in general waste streams, or food in general waste or recycling.
You'll be wearing gloves and a protective suit for over your clothes as a precaution. Don't worry though, we won't be opening any bags that look too messy - or smelly!
