The Walking Society is more than just a group for walking enthusiasts — it’s a welcoming community designed to bring students together through exploration, exercise, and social connection. Whether you’re new to Liverpool, looking to meet new people, or simply want a break from study stresses, this society offers a supportive space to discover the city and its surroundings on foot, at your own pace, with no pressure or expectations.
The Walking Society was founded to create an inclusive environment where everyone, regardless of fitness level or experience, can enjoy the benefits of walking as a form of exercise and socialising. Our mission is to help members explore Liverpool and the nearby countryside while forging meaningful friendships in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. We understand that moving to a new city can be intimidating, so our society is a perfect way to escape the everyday pressures, get fresh air, and connect with fellow students. We organise a variety of activities, including charity walks—such as our memorable half-marathon walk to Aintree—collaborations with other sports like boxing, yoga, and rounders, as well as both sober and social events. Beyond walks, we engage with Liverpool’s vibrant local events like the Festival of Lights and Christmas Markets, and we also take trips further afield to explore new cities and landscapes. Our diverse calendar ensures there’s something for everyone, whether you want a peaceful stroll or a lively social gathering.
The Walking Society gathers once a week, meeting at the Student Life Building before setting off on our adventures. We also host weekly social days and nights to ensure members have plenty of opportunities to connect beyond walking itself. To stay updated on upcoming walks, socials, and special events, members are encouraged to follow our social media accounts and join our active WhatsApp group. We aim to keep our activities fun, accessible, and inclusive for all, with no requirement for special equipment or prior experience.
Joining the Walking Society is a fantastic way to experience the best of Liverpool and its surrounding areas while enjoying some fresh air and physical activity away from the books. It offers a perfect balance of fun, relaxation, and social connection, making it easy to make new friends and create lasting memories. The society is free to join, with no pressure to perform or attend every event — you’re welcome to come along whenever it suits you. Whether you’re seeking an opportunity to unwind, explore new places, or simply enjoy a good chat with like-minded people, the Walking Society provides a warm, friendly community that encourages you to get involved and try something new.
Each society is led by a student committee responsible for running the society, organising activities, and representing its members. The committee is chaired by the Society President, with support from other elected roles.
