Powerlifting is a strength sport that focuses on the three big lifts — squat, bench press, and deadlift. It’s about more than just lifting heavy; it’s about discipline, technique, and pushing your personal limits. Whether you're training for competition or simply looking to build strength and confidence, powerlifting offers a powerful and rewarding path to self-improvement.

Our Powerlifting Club welcomes lifters of all backgrounds — from complete beginners to competitive athletes. We provide structured training sessions, expert guidance, and a supportive environment to help you lift safely and progress with purpose. Beyond the barbell, we’re a tight-knit community that celebrates every milestone, big or small. Step up to the platform — it’s more than just lifting, it’s a mindset.

About Us

Liverpool is a vibrant hub for powerlifting, boasting numerous clubs and experienced coaches throughout the city. At LJMU Powerlifting, our mission is to introduce students to the sport and the principles of heavy barbell training, while also providing access to a dedicated strength and conditioning facility. Whether you’re completely new to powerlifting or already have experience, you’ll find a supportive community and training partners who share your passion and goals.

Our current team is diverse, consisting of both men and women ranging from absolute beginners who have never competed to seasoned lifters who have represented nationally and internationally. No matter your level of experience or ambitions—whether you want to train consistently and build strength or prepare to compete on the platform—there is a place for you here.

One of the highlights of our calendar is the varsity competition against the University of Liverpool, usually held early each year. We encourage all members to participate and experience the thrill of competition. As part of your membership, you’ll gain access to a free four-week training program designed to help you get started safely and effectively in powerlifting. Additionally, experienced lifters within the club are always happy to offer guidance and support for those interested in competing.

Key Information

We hold our main training sessions every Wednesday from 1 pm to 3 pm in Studio 2 of the LJMU Sports Building. These sessions are led by our Club Captain, who focuses on one of the three main lifts each week, helping you refine your technique and answer any questions. This is an ideal setting for beginners to learn and build confidence, but all members are welcome to join and enjoy the social aspect of training together. More experienced lifters should note that equipment may be limited during these sessions, so joining the LJMU gym is recommended to maximize your training.

This year, we have also introduced smaller group sessions at a local powerlifting gym called Power and Fitness. These sessions are tailored for more advanced lifters who want to train with competition-standard equipment and alongside other serious lifters. They will run multiple times a week, with details communicated through our group channels.

Why Us?

Join LJMU Powerlifting to get strong, improve your fitness, and be part of a friendly and motivating community. Whether your goal is personal growth, competition, or just having fun with like-minded people, this club offers all that and more.

Committee

Each sports club is led by a student committee responsible for running the club, organising activities, and representing members. The committee is chaired by the Club Captain, with support from other elected roles.
