Piltdown is a vibrant and welcoming community focused on supporting students and staff involved in Forensic Anthropology and Human Evolution & Behaviour at LJMU. Our society creates an inclusive space that blends academic support with social opportunities, encouraging members to connect across all levels of study—from Level 3 students preparing to join the course, to undergraduates and postgraduates, as well as faculty members. Through a mix of formal and informal events, Piltdown offers a unique environment to deepen your knowledge, share interests, and build lasting friendships within this fascinating field.

About Us

Welcome to Piltdown! We are a dedicated society that brings together students passionate about Forensic Anthropology and Human Evolution & Behaviour. Our community is open to undergraduates currently studying these courses, postgraduates in related fields, and Level 3 students who plan to join the courses at Level 4. Beyond students, we actively involve faculty members, fostering a relaxed atmosphere where both students and staff can interact outside of the usual classroom setting. Piltdown offers a balance of academic enrichment and fun, informal events designed to support your studies while also helping you build connections with peers and lecturers alike. Whether you’re looking to prepare for upcoming modules, unwind with friends, or learn more about your discipline, Piltdown is here to support and engage you throughout your academic journey.

Key Information

Piltdown meets regularly, usually every month or two, with events held at the Ship and Mitre Pub—a friendly venue perfect for socialising and informal discussions. In addition to these organised meet-ups, we host a variety of activities throughout the academic year, including revision sessions to help you prepare for exams, movie nights centred on themes relevant to our field, and quiz nights that combine fun with learning. Stay up to date with all our events and announcements by following our Piltdown Instagram page, and check out our display board on the 4th floor of James Parsons Tower, where we post news, posters, and useful information for all members.

Why Us?

Joining Piltdown means becoming part of a supportive community where you can take a break from lectures and coursework, while still staying connected to your field of study. Our events offer the perfect opportunity to meet coursemates and students from other years, helping you build friendships and academic networks that extend beyond the university walls. With faculty members actively participating, you’ll also get the chance to interact with your lecturers in a relaxed, informal setting, providing insights into your courses and advice that can help you get ahead. Whether you want to prepare for future modules, seek guidance, or simply enjoy socialising with like-minded individuals, Piltdown offers a comfortable and engaging space to enhance both your academic and social university experience.

Each society is led by a student committee responsible for running the society, organising activities, and representing its members. The committee is chaired by the Society President, with support from other elected roles.
