Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a high-intensity combat sport that blends striking, grappling, and ground techniques from disciplines like boxing, wrestling, Muay Thai, Jiu Jitsu, and more. It’s fast, technical, and physically demanding — pushing your strength, endurance, and mental resilience to the next level. Whether you're looking to compete, build confidence, or just challenge yourself, MMA offers something for everyone.
Our MMA club welcomes all experience levels — from absolute beginners to seasoned fighters. You’ll learn a wide range of techniques in a safe, respectful environment, with expert coaching and a strong focus on discipline, control, and personal progress. We train regularly, offer optional sparring, and create a supportive, inclusive space for anyone serious about improving themselves. Join us — MMA isn’t just about fighting, it’s about mastering your mind and body.

LJMU MMA is a student-led martial arts group dedicated to teaching the fundamentals of Mixed Martial Arts and self-defence, including Boxing, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Wrestling. Our mission is to help students build confidence, stay active, and develop new skills in a welcoming and supportive environment. Whether you're a total beginner or have prior experience, everyone is welcome. For those looking to take it further, we also offer opportunities to compete in events throughout the year. Beyond training, we pride ourselves on our vibrant social scene, with regular events, a fun-loving community, and sponsorship from Revolution. With two dedicated Social Secs, there’s always something exciting on the calendar.
Our sessions are held at Next Generation MMA, located at 78 Kempston Street, Liverpool, L3 8HE. All you need to bring is comfortable gym wear (no zips or hard buttons), a water bottle, and ensure any jewellery is removed. Good personal hygiene and trimmed nails are required for safety and cleanliness. Equipment like boxing gloves (12oz+), gum shields, shin guards, and hand wraps are useful if you have them, but the gym can provide essentials as needed.
MMA is for everyone – it brings people together, builds resilience, and encourages mutual respect. At LJMU MMA, we’ve created more than just a club; we’ve built a family. From your first session, you'll be welcomed into a community where lasting friendships and unforgettable experiences are made. Our inclusive approach means you can train casually or compete, no matter your level. We regularly enter competitions like Empire Grappling, where even beginners have medaled. Socially, we host weekly events – from fight nights and team dinners to relaxed activities for non-drinkers. Join us to challenge yourself, have fun, and make the most of your university journey.
Each sports club is led by a student committee responsible for running the club, organising activities, and representing members. The committee is chaired by the Club Captain, with support from other elected roles.
