The Medieval Society brings history to life through immersive reenactment and hands-on craftsmanship. Our members dive deep into 12th-century medieval culture by training in historical combat, creating authentic garments and weapons, and participating in events across the UK alongside prestigious groups like Historia Normannis and English Heritage.

About Us

We are a passionate collective of 12th-century reenactors dedicated to authentically portraying the life, battles, and traditions of the medieval period. Our society provides a unique opportunity to experience history beyond the classroom by actively engaging in combat training, crafting historically accurate clothing, and forging some of our own weapons. We regularly collaborate with renowned organizations such as Historia Normannis and English Heritage, performing at events and historical shows nationwide. Whether you’re fascinated by the art of medieval warfare, interested in traditional crafts like leatherwork and maille making, or simply want to meet others who share your love of history, our society welcomes you. We believe that history is best understood through experience, and we encourage everyone—beginners and seasoned reenactors alike—to come and join us on the battlefield or at our craft sessions to learn firsthand and get involved.

Key Information

The Medieval Society meets twice weekly to accommodate both the practical and creative sides of our passion. On Thursdays, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, we hold craft sessions in the Student Life Building (usually UG15) where members work on everything from clothing to armor making. Sundays are dedicated to combat training, taking place from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM in the SLB Sports Studio 1, focusing on honing our skills in historical fighting techniques. Feel free to drop in and try either or both sessions — no prior experience is necessary, and everyone with an interest is warmly welcomed.

Why Us?

Joining the Medieval Society is a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the Middle Ages through engaging and educational activities that go beyond textbooks. Aside from thrilling combat training, you’ll have the chance to develop new skills in traditional crafts like leatherworking, chainmail making, and costume design. The society is also a wonderful place to forge friendships with fellow enthusiasts from across the country who share a passion for history and medieval culture. Whether you want to test your fighting prowess, express creativity through craftsmanship, or simply be part of a fun, supportive community, the Medieval Society offers an unforgettable experience for all levels of interest and expertise. Newcomers are always encouraged to join and start their own journey into the fascinating world of medieval reenactment!
