The LJMU Marrow Society is a student-led group working in partnership with Anthony Nolan, the UK’s stem cell charity. Our primary focus is to save the lives of people with blood cancer by registering students to the stem cell donor registry, raising vital funds, and spreading awareness across campus about how easy it is to save a life.

About Us

LJMU Marrow is part of a nationwide network of university groups all working toward the same goal: curing blood cancer. Every day, someone is diagnosed with blood cancer, and for many, a stem cell transplant from a matching donor is their last or only chance at survival.

Our job on campus is to break down the misconceptions around stem cell donation and show students how a simple, painless cheek swab can add them to the UK register. We run regular donor recruitment drives where we sign up potential lifesavers, organize charity fundraisers, and campaign to increase the diversity of the registry—as patients from ethnic minority backgrounds currently face much lower chances of finding a matching donor. Joining Marrow gives you a practical way to volunteer, gain campaigning experience, and make a tangible difference while at university.

Key Information

We split our time between volunteer training, on-campus recruitment drives, and fundraising events. Our recruitment clinics are held throughout the academic year in high-footprint campus areas, particularly the Student Life Building and various university libraries, where we chat with students and assist them with the cheek swab process.

We also organise a range of relaxed fundraising events, from bake sales and pub quizzes to collaborative events with other sports and societies. You can choose your own level of commitment—whether you want to become a fully trained volunteer who helps run the clinics, assist with social media promotion, or just support our fundraising events. All meeting times, training sessions, and upcoming clinic dates are posted regularly in our WhatsApp group chat and on our social media pages.

Why Us?

Because university students are at the ideal age to join the register. Anthony Nolan urgently needs young, healthy individuals to sign up, as younger donors provide the best possible transplant outcomes for patients.

You don’t need any medical background or prior volunteering experience to get involved. We provide all the necessary training on how to discuss the registry and process swabs safely. It is a highly rewarding society where your efforts directly contribute to saving lives, while allowing you to develop valuable skills in campaigning, event management, and public engagement. If you’re looking for a purposeful, straightforward way to give back and meet a motivated group of peers, LJMU Marrow is the place to do it.

Committee

Each society is led by a student committee responsible for running the society, organising activities, and representing its members. The committee is chaired by the Society President, with support from other elected roles.
