We’re one of more than 25 accredited societies across the Young Liberals UK network, which means we’re backed by the support and resources of the Liberal Democrats. This gives us the tools and opportunities to make our society as exciting, welcoming, and rewarding for LJMU students as possible.
We provide a welcoming space for students to explore liberal values, discuss key political issues, and take part in grassroots campaigning. Members gain opportunities to connect with the wider party, join national and local campaigns, and develop skills in leadership, public speaking, and organising. Above all, the society exists to amplify young voices and support students in becoming the changemakers of tomorrow.
The LJMU Liberal Democrat Society is the official home on campus for students who are passionate about politics, curious about liberal values, or simply eager to understand how political ideas shape our communities and our country. As an affiliated branch of Young Liberals UK, the youth wing of the Liberal Democrats, we are part of a vibrant national network that empowers young people to get involved, be heard, and influence change at every level of politics.
Our society provides an inclusive and welcoming environment where students can meet like-minded peers, engage in open discussions, and debate the pressing issues of the day. We are committed to making politics accessible, breaking down barriers, and creating opportunities for students to learn, lead, and grow as individuals. Whether you are interested in grassroots campaigning, exploring policy, running for office, or simply gaining a deeper understanding of liberalism in action, there is a place for you here.
By joining, you will have the chance to connect with the wider Liberal Democrat movement, take part in national and local campaigns, and work alongside experienced activists and elected representatives. You will also build valuable skills in leadership, public speaking, and community organising, while contributing to causes that matter, including housing, climate change, social justice and inclusion. Above all, the society is about ensuring young voices are heard and helping students become the changemakers of tomorrow, both at LJMU and beyond.
We host regular meetings throughout each term, usually taking place on campus in accessible, friendly spaces. These sessions include policy discussions, campaign planning, guest speakers, and laid-back socials. You’ll also find us attending or supporting wider events run by the Young Liberals or local party branches, giving you the chance to connect with students and political thinkers from across the country. Dates, times, and any updates will be shared via our Instagram and mailing list, so be sure to follow us to stay informed.
Joining the LJMU Liberal Democrats Society means more than being politically active — it means being part of a community that cares about progressive change, open-minded discussion, and standing up for what's right. Whether you're interested in campaigning, policy-making, or simply expanding your understanding of the UK’s political system, our society gives you a platform to grow. It’s also a great opportunity to meet like-minded students, boost your confidence in debate and public speaking, and make connections that could shape your future in politics, law, public affairs, or advocacy. Whatever your background or level of experience, if you care about fairness, freedom, and the future — we’d love to meet you.
Each society is led by a student committee responsible for running the society, organising activities, and representing its members. The committee is chaired by the Society President, with support from other elected roles.

The Liverpool John Moores University Liberal Democrat Society is proudly affiliated with Young Liberals UK, the official youth wing of the Liberal Democrats. Under the leadership of Society President, Tristan Paul, a Law (LLB Hons) student, the society plays an active role in shaping both local and national politics. Tristan not only serves as Membership Development Officer for Liverpool Liberal Democrats but also stood as the party’s candidate for Sefton Park Ward, where he achieved 20.5% of the vote in the 2025 by-election. This represented a 15.4% swing from the previous result. His political work extends nationally, having campaigned for Tom Morrison MP in Cheadle and contributed to the party’s first Liverpool by-election victory in 27 years at Much Woolton and Hunts Cross. Beyond electoral politics, Tristan is the founder of Your City, Your Voice, a community education campaign encouraging young people to engage with democracy, and serves as Campaigns Officer for Speak to Me, a national disability rights campaign. Drawing on his lived experience of growing up in care, he champions policies tackling youth homelessness, housing insecurity, and equal access to opportunity. These priorities are ones he is committed to advancing within the Young Liberals and beyond.
