2021 LJMU Law Society Committee Roles

PLEASE NOTE, THE ROLE OF PRESIDENT AND VICE PRESIDENT IS ONLY OPEN TO CURRENT MEMBERS OF THE COMMITTEE.

  • Treasurer:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Managing the society finances
  • Liaising with the SU to agree on an appropriate membership price
  • Countersigning requisition forms to authorise payments
  • Ensuring deposits are paid for the law ball and legal professional evening
  • Acquiring sponsorships for the society

This is a great role to demonstrate your integrity to future employers, a key quality for solicitors and barristers.

  • Mooting coordinator:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Hosting a ‘Mooting 101 Workshop’ to interested members
  • Organising the internal mooting competition
  • Keeping participants engaged
  • Judging the internal mooting competition
  • Promoting the competition, which includes liaising with the social media coordinator
  • Promoting external mooting competitions to members, which includes liaising with the social media coordinator

  • Social media coordinator:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Creating engaging content to share on social media platforms
  • Promoting events on social media platforms throughout the year
  • Engaging members within the society throughout the year
  • Answering members queries in a timely manner
  • Keep the information on the law society page up to date on the JMSU website

* Social media platforms refers to: Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn

  • External events coordinator:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Organising networking events for members
  • Hosting events to increase members employability prospects
  • Engaging members
  • Promoting your events, this includes liaising with the social media coordinator

  • Law ball coordinator:

Whilst we have not been able to organise a law ball this year, we are hopeful that we will be able to host one next year,

Responsibilities (Covid-19 permitting) include, but are not limited to:

  • Deciding on and booking a venue to host the law ball
  • Deciding on a theme for the law ball
  • Organising the decorations for the law ball
  • Arranging seating plans
  • Promoting the event, which will include liaising with the social media coordinator

If Covid-19 restrictions are in place, you will be required to use your initiative to host a similar event virtually (or in line with Covid-19 restrictions).

This is our biggest social event of the year!

  • Legal professional evening coordinator

Whilst we have not been able to organise a Legal Professional Evening this year due to Coivd-19 restrictions, we are hopeful that we will be able to host one next year.

Responsibilities (Covid-19 permitting) include, but are not limited to:

  • Deciding on and booking a venue to host the evening
  • Organise the attendance of legal professionals
  • Arranging seating plans
  • Promoting the event, which will include liaising with the social media coordinator

If Covid-19 restrictions are in place, you will be required to use your initiative to host a similar event virtually (or in line with Covid-19 restrictions).

This is one of our most important events of the year!

  • Charity coordinator:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Choosing a charity to raise money for
  • Organising charity events throughout the year (a minimum of 1 event each semester)
  • Organising a charity raffle for our annual law ball

If Covid-19 restrictions are still in place, you will be required to host events virtually.

  • BAME Officer:

You will be a representative for BAME members, ensuring that the law society is an inclusive environment.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Organising events e.g. panel / networking events
  • Ensuring all events are diverse and open to all e.g. representative professionals at panel events
  • Arranging for a non-alcoholic drinks menu at the legal professional evening and law ball
  • Assisting the social secretary in organising non-alcoholic socials

  • Social Mobility Officer:

You will be a representative for those from ‘non-traditional’ backgrounds, ensuring that the law society is an inclusive environment.

  • Organising events e.g. panel / networking events
  • Ensuring all events are diverse and open to all e.g. representative professionals at panel events
  • Ensuring chargeable events such as the LPE and Law Ball are affordable for all students, including working closely with the treasurer to create a budget to support those who cannot afford to attend.
  • Advertising financial support for postgraduate course e.g. Inns of Court scholarships

  • Social secretary:

Whilst all socials have been virtual this year due to Covid-19, we are hopeful that in person socials may be permitted during the next academic year.

Responsibilities (Covid-19) permitting include, but are not limited to:

  • Organising socials
  • Creating themes for socials (e.g. white t-shirt social, Halloween social, etc)
  • Encouraging members to attend socials

If Covid-19 restrictions are still in place, you will be required to use your initiative to come up with fun and exciting virtual socials, which engage members.
