Handball is a fast-paced and high-energy team sport that combines the speed of basketball with the strategy of football and the physicality of rugby. Played indoors with seven players on each side, the aim is to score by throwing the ball into the opponent’s goal. It’s a game that demands agility, teamwork, quick reflexes, and sharp decision-making.
Our Handball team is open to everyone — whether you’ve played before or are brand new to the sport. It’s a brilliant way to stay fit, pick up a new skillset, and be part of a lively, committed group of players. We train regularly, take part in student leagues and tournaments, and host plenty of social activities throughout the year. Get involved — handball isn’t just exciting to play, it’s a community you’ll love being part of.

The LJMU Handball team is proud to be part of BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport), competing in inter-university tournaments and the prestigious British University Handball Championships. This involvement means several exciting weekends away throughout the year, offering fantastic opportunities to build friendships and connections with students from other universities. Alongside competitive fixtures, we also organize friendly matches against nearby university teams to keep skills sharp and the fun ongoing. This year, both our Men’s and Women’s teams have been selected as BUCS focus teams, unlocking a range of benefits and support, making it an even more exciting time to join.
Training takes place twice a week, every Tuesday from 9:00 pm to 10:15 pm and Sunday evenings from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm, held at the LJMU Sports Building located next to the Student Life Building at 85 Brownlow Hill, Liverpool L3 5AJ. For away games, tournaments, and competitions, transport and accommodation arrangements are taken care of by the team. To be part of LJMU Handball, a membership fee is required, with pricing to be confirmed in September. This fee is affordable and covers the costs associated with travel, accommodation, and training.
LJMU Handball offers a welcoming environment for students to either discover a new sport or continue developing their handball skills. Our friendly and inclusive team culture is a fantastic way to meet new people, both within LJMU and from other universities. We also have strong ties with the local Liverpool Handball Club, with many of our players advancing to compete at the club level. Beyond training and matches, we emphasize social connection, with weekly social nights every Wednesday that are open to all and provide a fun way to unwind and bond with teammates outside the court.
Each sports club is led by a student committee responsible for running the club, organising activities, and representing members. The committee is chaired by the Club Captain, with support from other elected roles.
