The Debating Society is a welcoming and student-led community dedicated to exploring
diverse ideas through lively, engaging, and respectful debates. We provide a space where anyone can join in, whether you’re an experienced debater or completely new to the world of public speaking and argument. Beyond debating, we foster friendships and build confidence through regular social events, creating an environment that is both fun and supportive.
The LJMU Debating Society meets weekly to encourage open-minded discussions on a broad spectrum of topics, ranging from lighthearted and entertaining to serious and thought-provoking. Each session involves splitting into teams, where members are assigned different sides of a debate — sometimes defending a viewpoint they might not personally agree with — which sharpens critical thinking and adaptability. Our debates are judged by committee members who provide constructive feedback, helping participants grow their skills in reasoning, public speaking, and teamwork. This society thrives on inclusivity, welcoming students from all backgrounds and courses, with no prior experience required. It’s a fantastic platform to engage with peers, challenge your perspectives, and practice articulating your ideas in a safe and encouraging environment.
Debating sessions take place every Thursday at 6pm in Redmonds Building, room 441. Alongside these weekly debates, we host various social nights out and informal gatherings that help build community and make friendships flourish. There is no joining fee, making it easy for any student to get involved. To stay informed about upcoming debates, socials, and events, members can join our mailing list through this webpage, follow our social media channels on Facebook and Instagram, or join our WhatsApp group. If you have any questions, the committee is always happy to help via email at ljmudebatingsociety@hotmail.com.
Joining the Debating Society offers far more than just weekly debates. It’s a chance to meet new people, develop valuable life skills, and gain the kind of confidence that benefits every aspect of university life and beyond. Whether you’re looking to improve your public speaking, enhance your critical thinking, or simply enjoy stimulating conversations on a wide range of topics, this society supports your growth in a friendly and encouraging setting. Being part of the society also looks great on your CV, demonstrating skills in communication, teamwork, and persuasion — qualities highly prized by employers across all fields. No matter your background or experience, you’ll find a welcoming community eager to help you find your voice.
Each society is led by a student committee responsible for running the society, organising activities, and representing its members. The committee is chaired by the Society President, with support from other elected roles.
