The Creative Writing Society is a welcoming and inclusive community for anyone interested in writing—whether you’re a seasoned storyteller, a casual poet, or someone who just likes to jot down thoughts or jokes online. It’s a space to experiment, collaborate, and connect through the power of words.

About Us

Are you someone who loves to write novels, poetry, or stories? Maybe you don’t see yourself as a writer yet, but have a creative spark you want to explore? The Creative Writing Society is open to all levels and styles of writing. We meet weekly to combine workshopping with socialising, creating an encouraging environment where members can share their work, receive constructive feedback, and grow our craft together.

Each session is designed to help you grow and develop your writing—whether it’s through individual projects or collaborative exercises to create fresh ideas. Beyond writing, we foster a strong sense of community through social events that help members bond and have fun.

We also produce a student-run zine, RatKidz, which allows students to publish their first in-print work. Alternatively, you can pick up a role behind the scenes and learn how a zine comes together. Our society is always eager to welcome fresh voices and talents from all walks of life, so join us and be part of something creative and inspiring!

Key Information

We meet regularly on Thursday evenings from 6 pm to 8 pm in the Student Life Building. We often follow our sessions with social events to keep the atmosphere relaxed and engaging.

To stay updated on meetings, events, and opportunities to contribute to RatKidz, follow our Instagram @ljmucreates and DM us with any questions or concerns. For further updates involving the society’s zine and upcoming issues, follow @ratkidzzine on Instagram. Whether you want to write, illustrate, or get involved in editing, there’s a place for you here.

Why Us?

We’re a fun, welcoming group that doesn’t take ourselves too seriously. If you want to meet people who are passionate about writing in all its forms, and enjoy a couple of laughs along the way, you’ll fit right in.

Joining the Creative Writing Society gives you a chance to develop your skills, share your work, and receive constructive feedback in a safe and friendly environment. Plus, our social events allow you to build friendships with your fellow creatives that can last beyond university.

Whether you’re here to hone your craft or just looking for a creative outlet and some new friends with similar interests, the Creative Writing Society is welcome to all.

Committee

Each society is led by a student committee responsible for running the society, organising activities, and representing its members. The committee is chaired by the Society President, with support from other elected roles.
