The Conservation Society (ConSoc) is dedicated to protecting wildlife and preserving natural habitats through practical volunteering, education, and community engagement. Our members are united by a shared passion for environmental stewardship and making a tangible difference in our local ecosystems.

About Us

At the heart of the Conservation Society is a deep commitment to helping the planet and its creatures thrive naturally, free from harm caused by human activity. Founded on this vision, ConSoc brings together a diverse group of people who care about wildlife and the environment, regardless of their academic background.

Our society proudly collaborates with a range of local organisations such as Friends of Crosby Beach, Friends of Sefton Park, New Ferry Butterfly Park, Sefton Council, and Gems in the Dunes, among others. Through these partnerships, we engage in meaningful projects like habitat restoration, beach and park clean-ups, bird watching, and invasive species removal. These hands-on activities not only help conserve our natural spaces but also allow members to learn valuable skills including hedge laying and species identification.

ConSoc’s dedication has been recognised with multiple awards, including the prestigious Society of the Year Award in 2020 and two Student Union accolades, testament to the passion and impact of our community. Beyond volunteering, we foster a welcoming and social atmosphere with regular events ranging from themed fancy dress nights to quizzes, movie screenings, and casual meet-ups at local pubs — with or without drinks!

Key Information

Our volunteering events typically occur once or twice each month, depending on opportunities provided by partner charities and local conservation projects. These activities vary throughout the academic year, offering members a chance to get involved in different aspects of wildlife and habitat preservation.

Social gatherings are held weekly or every two weeks, providing a relaxed setting to meet fellow members, share experiences, and celebrate our collective achievements. Meeting locations and event updates are communicated through our social media channels and society mailing list to keep everyone informed and engaged.

Why Us?

You don’t need to be studying an environmental science or animal-related course to join ConSoc — all who care about conservation and want to make a positive difference are welcome. Becoming a member means connecting with a friendly, motivated community while gaining hands-on experience that benefits both your CV and the environment.

Volunteering with us offers practical opportunities to develop transferable skills such as teamwork, leadership, and ecological knowledge. Plus, you’ll be making a direct impact on local green spaces and wildlife habitats, helping ensure they remain healthy and vibrant for generations to come.

Joining ConSoc also means having fun! Our social events create a supportive space to build friendships and enjoy university life beyond the classroom. Whether you’re passionate about nature or just looking for a rewarding way to spend your time, Conservation Society offers a fulfilling and engaging experience.

Committee

Each society is led by a student committee responsible for running the society, organising activities, and representing its members. The committee is chaired by the Society President, with support from other elected roles.
