As a student, Results Day can be both an exciting and nerve-wrecking experience. Whether you’ve done well or not, it’s important to know what to do next. As your Students’ Union, we’re here to lend a helping hand.

Here are four top tips to help you, now you’ve received your results today.

1. Celebrate your achievements

You did it! Reward yourself for another year of hard work and achievements – whether you got the result you wanted or not. Take some time to reflect on your journey at LJMU and how far you’ve come. Celebrate with friends, family or loved ones and give yourself a well-earned rest. This will help you to feel proud of your accomplishments and motivated to continue to work hard in the future.

2. Talk to your peers – but don’t compare yourself

Whilst it’s important to chat to fellow course mates about their results, the worst thing you can do is compare. Talking to others may help you understand decision making, markings and points of view. However, each individual tackles exams and assessments differently.

Confer – not compare.

3. Don’t be too hard on yourself

If you didn’t get the results you wanted, don’t be too hard on yourself. Remember, exams are just one measure of your abilities – if you know you have worked hard, that’s an achievement. Think back to tip number one and reward yourself for little achievements that make you feel proud of your work, regardless of the outcome. Instead of worrying about the result, set yourself future goals - what you want after university, and what priorities in life matter most to you – this will motivate you to think differently about the results. Make sure your goals are small yet impactful, manageable, and achievable.

This may be tricky, so make sure you have a good support system around you. Which leads nicely onto our last tip…

4. Seek help and support

Both LJMU and us have advice services for you to take advantage of.

Get in touch with us! We have a confidential and impartial academic advice service for you to make use of. From academic appeals for your results, misconduct, personal circumstances, dispensary’s and more, you can chat to us as a separate organisation to the university – meaning whatever you say will be in your best interests with complete clarity, transparency, and confidentiality.  We do not give advice over social media DMs or over the phone, but a member of JMSU will pass you onto the appropriate team so you can get the help you need. To go straight to our advisors, you can book an appointment with us today.

If you need academic advice, mental health and wellbeing support, money and funding advice, housing support or general wellbeing help you can contact the university’s dedicated Student Advice and Wellbeing team. You can chat to them over the phone, or in person, by booking an appointment with them.

So, remember – commemorate how far you’ve come and don’t be too hard on yourself. Set goals for yourself and keep learning. Make sure to seek support from those around you and don’t go through it alone.

Follow these tips and results day will feel a lot less scary and a little more celebratory.
