Spring Bank Holiday in Liverpool was anything but quiet โ€” especially for the lucky group of students from Moore Student Radio! With BBC Radio 1โ€™s Big Weekend, a title parade, and exclusive interviews, this was a week packed with even Moore than could have been imagined. Journalism student and Radio Society member Tom Pratten gives us a backstage pass to all the action! ๐ŸŽง ๐Ÿ‘€

Tuesday 20th May ๐ŸŽค

The fun started on Tuesday, during the Moore Breakfast show, hosted by Jack, who had a very exciting guest on his show. As Radio 1โ€™s Big Weekend was coming up, he managed to host an insightful interview with Dan Haggis, a band member from one of the festivalโ€™s headlining acts - The Wombats.

Haggis spoke openly on everything from the early days, touring as a band and being from Liverpool!

Wednesday 21st May ๐Ÿคฏ

Wednesday morning started off on a sad but celebratory note. Jack was joined by Tom on the breakfast show - the last show of the academic year on Moore Student Radio.

The evening would be a special one; six members of the team were invited to BBC Radio 1โ€™s Outside Broadcasting (OB Truck). We had the once in a lifetime experience of meeting Greg James, being shown around a functioning BBC radio studio, and even getting to use the technology! But that wasnโ€™t allโ€ฆ as Greg was showing us all the equipment, he pointed us to the screen, where a Zoom call was being broadcast with none other than MILEY CYRUS!

It turns out Greg had a trick up his sleeve and wanted to surprise us all with the A-list pop star, with over 212 million Instagram followers - it worked! Phoebe and Darcy broke down in tears! We were being recorded for Greg Jamesโ€™ Breakfast show on BBC Radio 1 โ€“ wow.

Thursday 22nd May ๐Ÿ“

Thursday was all about making plans for the weekend, as we reminisced about what had happened the night before.

Friday 23rd May (Big Weekend Day 1) ๐Ÿ•บ

Friday was the first day of the Big Weekend and of course โ€“ we were there! Our station manager and deputy station manager had press passes kindly given by the BBC for exclusive access. The Wombats gave an energy-filled set, it felt surreal watching our newfound friend Dan Haggis doing his thing! We then enjoyed phenomenal sets from Natasha Bedingfield, Biffy Clyro and the headliner Tom Grennan, to close off an incredible opening day.

Saturday 24th May (Big Weekend Day 2) ๐Ÿ“ท

Saturday was another chaotic one! We had the privilege of meeting and catching up with the fantastic Sam Macgregor from BBC Radio 1, who spoke to us glowingly about the festival and his love for student radio. We then enjoyed the incredible music from the likes of Blossoms, and of course our personal favourite Sam Fender!

Sunday 25th May (Big Weekend Day 3) ๐ŸŽถ

Throughout the festival we ensured we were busy on our socials, keeping everybody up to date on our antics! Sunday was the perfect end to a special weekend, albeit with a little bit of rain, with the bangers provided by Tate McCrae and Mumford and Sons.

Monday 26th May ๐Ÿ†

It was Bank Holiday Monday, and a big day for the whole city. It was no doubt a monumental occasion as the Premier League champions paraded their trophy through City of Liverpool. We were thrilled to see the city turn red, with millions flocking to Liverpool for joyous celebrations. Unfortunately, due to the incident on Water Street, celebrations were cut short. Moore Student Radio fully supports those affected and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured.

WHAT. A. WEEK! โœจ

A perfect way to end what has been a fantastic FIRST year for us. But trust us - weโ€™re just getting started! ๐Ÿš€
