An early goodbye to our President, Emily

Emily

Whilst Student Officers usually leave us in the Summer, we will be saying goodbye to President Emily a little earlier than usual as she embarks on her new career combining her passion for physical activity and communications.

After almost two years at JMSU as both Vice President of Activities (2020-21) and President (2021-22), Emily will be hanging up her Student Officer hat and heading up North to begin her dream career in sport as a Communications and Events Coordinator at Edinburgh University.

Emily’s last day at JMSU will be Friday 11 March, when she will officially step down and hand over all Presidential and Chair of Trustee Board duties to our remaining three-strong Student Officer team and JMSU staff team.

But before we say our final goodbyes, we would like to shine a light on Emily’s JMSU journey:

  • Arrived at LJMU In 2017 to study Sport & Exercise Science, Physiology & Physical Activity.

  • Became a member of the Trampolining team

  • Worked as a JMSU Student Staff member, supporting the work of our Marketing, Student Voice and Student Opportunities teams.

  • Graduated from JMSU with flying colours in 2020 (but finally getting her cap and gown moment in 2022!)

  • Successfully elected as Vice President for Activities and joined the JMSU Board of Trustees in July 2020. Unphased by leading the organisation through a pandemic, Emily established a sense of community and wellbeing for LJMU students in virtual spaces during Covid-19 lockdowns, joined forces with Student Officers across Liverpool Unions to lobby Government for better financial support for students during and post-Covid, and was also behind the successful campaign for a return to campus (when safe) for the benefit of students. On top of this, Emily supported the project development of the new SLB and Sports Building and saw her InclusActivity campaign shortlisted for the Diversity and Inclusion Campaign at the British University College Sport Awards 2021. Her passion for sport also resulted in her being appointed BUCS Competitions and Performance Officer for two years running, and led to Emily working with LJMU to develop the new Sports Strategy including new branding, kits, and a positive increase in the number of BUCS teams.

  • Successfully elected as JMSU’s President and Chair of the Board of Trustees in July 2021. Some of Emily’s most notable work of late has included supporting a successful Fresher’s Fair enjoyed by 5000 students, raising £6k for Movember with help from student groups, supporting the move to the Student Life Building for students and JMSU staff, and helping JMSU to rebuild its offer on the other side of Covid-19.

On behalf of everyone at JMSU, we would like to thank Emily for her dedication and hard work at JMSU, and wish her all the very best for her new career.

The remaining three Student Officers will continue their hard work supporting students until Summer 2022. We’re currently on the hunt for the next four who will take the lead at JMSU for the 2022/23 academic year – for more information, please visit our Elections webpage.
