The Women in STEM Society at Liverpool John Moores University is a vibrant and supportive community designed to empower women and underrepresented individuals pursuing studies and careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment where members can grow academically, socially, and professionally, working together to challenge the existing gender imbalance in STEM fields and promote equality.
At LJMU, we take great pride in supporting women and underrepresented groups within STEM disciplines. Current research indicates that only 35% of all STEM students identify as women, emphasizing the need for a society dedicated to advocacy, awareness, and empowerment. The Women in STEM Society embodies the spirit of ASCEND — which stands for Advocate and Awareness, Support, Community and Charity, Engagement and Empowerment, Networking, and Diversity. Our society provides a welcoming and safe space where members can build lasting friendships, develop important skills, and access unique opportunities that help prepare them for success both in university and in their future careers. Whether you are new to STEM or well on your path, this society supports your journey every step of the way.
Our main meetings take place every Tuesday, alternating between focused study sessions held either in the Student Life Building or at popular study spots around Liverpool, and activity weeks that offer skill-building workshops, collaborative projects, or simply relaxed social gatherings. Throughout the academic year, we also organize larger events such as guest speaker presentations, networking opportunities, and outdoor socials. To stay informed about all our events and opportunities, members are encouraged to follow our social media channels and participate in our group chats where updates are regularly posted.
Joining the Women in STEM Society means gaining access to a diverse range of academic, professional, and social experiences designed especially for women and underrepresented individuals in STEM. Members benefit from tailored workshops on CV writing, presentation skills, and interactive lab sessions, as well as the chance to hear from inspiring guest speakers and visit university research facilities. Educational trips to science museums, observatories, and other STEM-related venues provide enriching experiences beyond the classroom. Social activities, such as themed nights out, quiz evenings, and collaborative events with other societies, create opportunities to build friendships and enjoy university life. Our society also offers fundraising and volunteering opportunities, formal socials, and café study sessions, all fostering a strong sense of community and support. We welcome member suggestions to ensure the society reflects your needs and interests, creating a truly inclusive environment where everyone can thrive and ASCEND.
Each society is led by a student committee responsible for running the society, organising activities, and representing its members. The committee is chaired by the Society President, with support from other elected roles.
