Rowing is a full-body sport that combines strength, endurance, and precision in perfect harmony. Whether you're gliding across calm waters at sunrise or racing in sync with your crew, rowing challenges both your physical limits and mental focus. It’s a sport that builds resilience, teamwork, and a deep connection to the rhythm of the water.
Our Rowing Club welcomes everyone — from complete beginners to experienced rowers. We offer coached sessions, technical workshops, and opportunities to train solo or as part of a crew. Whether you're here to compete, keep fit, or simply enjoy the serenity of the water, you’ll find a supportive community ready to welcome you aboard. Take up the oars — it’s more than just rowing, it’s a way of life.

Rowing is one of the most iconic and rewarding university sports – and at LJMU Rowing Club, there’s a place for everyone, from experienced rowers to complete beginners. Whether you’re aiming to compete or just want to enjoy the camaraderie and fresh air, you’ll be welcomed into a supportive and active community. We train on the historic Liverpool docks in boats ranging from single sculls to 8-person sweepers, and within your first semester, you could be racing at events across the North West and beyond. But rowing isn’t just about the water – our club has a lively social scene too, with regular themed nights out, sober socials, cook-outs, and events that bring together rowers and friends from across LJMU. If you want to challenge yourself, meet like-minded people, and experience the university journey to the fullest – this is your club.
Training takes place on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays at the Liverpool Watersports Centre, located on the docks. Sessions typically last around two hours on the water, with coaching tailored to each squad. We also provide gym and rowing machine (erg) workouts designed by our captains to support your development. Training times vary depending on whether you join the men’s, women’s, or social squad. We also meet regularly for gym sessions in groups, and usually head out together for food afterwards to refuel and socialise. Our weekly socials are a big part of the club, ranging from big themed nights out to casual events where everyone can relax and get to know each other. Whether you’re into competition or community, we’ve got something for you.
We offer the chance to get involved in a unique and exciting sport while experiencing Liverpool from a whole new perspective – out on the water. You’ll be training in a world-class heritage site, supported by a committed committee and surrounded by members from all over the world. Join us at a taster session or come along to one of our many socials to see what we’re about. Whether you’re here to row hard, laugh lots, or both – you’ll be made to feel right at home.
Each sports club is led by a student committee responsible for running the club, organising activities, and representing members. The committee is chaired by the Club Captain, with support from other elected roles.
