The LJMU Book Society is a relaxed and inclusive space where book lovers of all kinds come together to share stories, swap ideas, and enjoy the joy of reading—however that looks for you. Whether you breeze through five novels a week, can’t stop re-reading your favourites, or just want to dip your toes into something new, this is your community.

About Us

The Book Society is LJMU’s laid-back haven for all things literary. Now in its third year, the society has grown into a fun, open-minded group of students brought together by a shared love for stories in all their forms—be it fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels, or manga. We meet regularly for casual discussions, themed quizzes, group activities, and occasional guest talks. This year, we're excited to be expanding with plans for book swaps, author visits, and city-wide events that connect us with Liverpool’s vibrant arts and culture scene.

Unlike traditional book clubs, we keep things flexible. Each chosen book or topic is up for debate, and everyone is encouraged to join in whether they’ve devoured the whole thing or barely made it through the first chapter. We love differing opinions, lively discussions, and off-topic tangents just as much as literary deep-dives. No genre is off-limits, no opinion too niche—we’re here for all of it.

Key Information

If you're curious about joining, simply get in touch with our society president, Aelia Zaidi. Follow us on Instagram and send a quick message to be added to our WhatsApp group, where we post updates about events, meetings, and other opportunities to get involved.

We meet regularly throughout the term, with event types and locations varying to keep things fun and fresh. Alongside book-focused meetups, we also plan socials such as cinema trips, theatre nights, meals out, and even the occasional skating or jazz night. Collaboration with other societies is something we value and hope to build on again this year.

Why Us?

The Book Society is more than just a reading group—it’s a friendly and social space where everyone is welcome. Whether you’re the type to bring a paperback everywhere you go or just want a reason to switch off your screen and unwind, you’ll find your place here.

We pride ourselves on being approachable and inclusive. Come along on your own and you'll be met with friendly faces and great conversation—or bring your friends along and make even more. There’s no pressure to read every book or contribute every time; we’re just glad to have you along for the journey. Whether you're here to talk about life, literature, or the latest Netflix adaptation, you'll be heard, welcomed, and inspired.

Committee

Each society is led by a student committee responsible for running the society, organising activities, and representing its members. The committee is chaired by the Society President, with support from other elected roles.
