Athletics and Cross Country offer something for everyone — whether you’re a sprinter, long-distance runner, jumper, or thrower. Athletics covers a wide range of track and field events, each demanding its own mix of speed, power, and technique. Cross Country, on the other hand, is all about endurance and determination, taking you off the track and into scenic (and often muddy!) terrains.
Our Athletics and Cross Country group welcomes all abilities — from experienced competitors to those just looking to get fitter and challenge themselves. We train together, support each other, and compete in student events throughout the year. And yes, we know how to unwind with plenty of socials and team bonding off the track too!
Whether you're chasing PBs or just love to run — come be part of the journey.
LJMU Athletics & Cross Country welcomes both competitive athletes and beginners, offering a supportive environment for all abilities. Our goal is to help each member create and achieve their personal fitness and competition goals. We participate in BUCS Athletics and Cross Country events, with cross country and indoor athletics held in February and outdoor athletics in May. BUCS is a prestigious fixture in the athletics calendar, often featuring top athletes, including members of Team GB.
Training for sprints, throws, jumps, and middle/long-distance events takes place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00 PM at Liverpool Harriers & AC, Wavertree Athletics Stadium. The stadium is easily accessible via the 79 bus from Queens Square or Liverpool ONE bus stations, or by train from Liverpool Lime Street Station to Wavertree Technology Park, followed by a short walk. If you already have your own training arrangements, you are still welcome to compete—just stay connected through our Facebook and Instagram pages so we can enter you into your desired events.
Athletics and cross country are excellent ways to improve endurance, strength, and speed while being part of a friendly and driven team. Whether you're looking to compete or simply stay active, our club offers expert-led training and exciting opportunities to race at a high level. Join us and be part of something inspiring!
Each sports club is led by a student committee responsible for running the club, organising activities, and representing members. The committee is chaired by the Club Captain, with support from other elected roles.
