We'll be taking you through everything you need to know about academic societies, and how you can join one!

What are academic societies?

Academic societies are student groups formulated around a passion for a particular subject. Often these are set up by students studying a particular course for example history students may wish to set up a history society. This doesn’t just have to be a subject that is offered as a degree at LJMU, it can simply be an area of interest which students have a passion for. For example, the feminist society is an active society at LJMU.

Why get involved?

Joining a student group has been proven as an excellent and effective way to improve the wellbeing of students. Often students have the misconception that societies are purely sports based, however that is not the case and certainly not at JMSU! We pride ourselves in our range of inclusive societies and know that here there is something for everyone to get involved in.

Academic societies will have opportunities to do activities and get involved in discussions about that particular academic subject. This can be a great way to broaden your knowledge of a topic! They are also a great way to meet likeminded people with whom you share a passion and will enable you to connect with others virtually in a time when it is so important to do so!

How do I get involved?

Good question! That all depends on which society it is that you’d like to join. A comprehensive list of all of our societies is available at https://www.jmsu.co.uk/groups. Here you will find a dedicated page for each group which gives information about the group, of any upcoming events and importantly contact details for those running the group.

In the contact details for many groups there are often details of any social media the society may use. Looking through these channels can be a great way to get a better feel of what the group is about and will give you an idea of whether it may be something you may like to join. You may even wish to send a quick message to introduce yourself and ask any questions you might have before deciding to join.

If you feel like you have found the right group for you, you can head on back over to https://www.jmsu.co.uk/groups where you can use the links to join the group and get your membership.

Why not have a browse now and see what interests you? Whether it be an old interest you'd like to reignite or something completely new to try during lockdown, we are confident that there will be something for you at JMSU!
