Student Officer statement: Message of condolence following earthquake

Thursday 09-02-2023 - 09:00

We would like to our deepest sympathies and condolences to everyone affected by the Kahramanmaras earthquake.

On Monday 6 February, people in Türkiye and Syria were met with high magnitude earthquakes and aftershocks, reaching as high as 7.8 on the Richter scale. This has unfortunately led to devastatingly high numbers of casualties, with many people still missing. This is the most severe natural disaster people in Türkiye have faced in over a century.
We understand that many LJMU students may be affected by these events and we want to assure you that support is available. The LJMU Student Advice and Wellbeing (SAW) department is ran by trained and experienced practitioners who are on hand to help students with any challenges they face. You can get support online, or you can see someone face-to-face if you visit the drop-in service from 10am-4pm Monday to Friday on the ground floor at in the entrance of the Student Life Building.

Many of you may also want to offer further support to the people of Türkiye and Syria. Charities including British Red Cross, Save the Children and Oxfam have launched emergency earthquake appeals to help people affected by the earthquake and support rescue efforts. Any donation, no matter how big or small, will provide vital support.
