We have over 100 societies at JMSU? That's right - from art to chess, film-making to gaming, mental health to feminist, you have endless choices to make new friends, find new hobbies or concentrate on political, personal or religious interests. We're here to help you find your feet at university and make memories to last a lifetime. It's important to have a work/personal life balance, which is why we offer so many different ways you can relax, have fun and enjoy your time at LJMU. One of the ways in which you can learn new skills, have fun and make friends is joining a society.
If you check out 'society' in the Cambridge Dictionary, you will find: "the state of being together with other people" and that's exactly what our societies encompass. You will find like-minded people that you want to socialise, work and have fun with. Don't believe us? Why not hear it from those who are currently in some of our societies today.
We asked some of our society members how they would describe being part of a society, and what it means to them.
One student said that a society is 'a community of friendly and like-minded people'. Some students used the word 'family' and described it as 'the best thing about uni'. It's really important for us to see that some students have become friends with other students they may not have met if it wasn't for the society they were part of, and that these students feel like family to them. It's integral to associate yourself with people that you can relate to at university, as you will enjoy your time here even more.
Another student explained that societies help you 'make new and good friends'. We love to see people expanding their friendship circles and meeting new people whilst at university.
You can check out our list of societies today and join in any you like the look of.
