“My faith means a lot to me as it gives me guidance and purpose in life, to appreciate the good times and weather the storm through the bad.” - Nimmi Amrik, Sikh Society. These words provide the best description of faith, and why we celebrate Inter Faith Week. We're here to highlight our staff and students' faiths and beliefs, and we hope to encourage people to come together and use this time learn about each other's faiths, celebrate LJMU's wide diversity of faiths and cultures and highlight the good work done by local faith, inter faith and faith-based groups and organisations.
We have a whole host of events on this week for all students to get involved and come along to, regardless of faith or belief. Members of our Islamic Society shared with us the concept that Islam to them is "a way of life that teaches, nurtures and protects Muslims every second of our life... it provides tranquility, guidance and purpose". We hope to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for those who want to celebrate with us, as well as highlighting our amazing faith societies within JMSU.
We understand that faith means a lot to so many of our students; it’s something those are proud of and makes them who they are. David Bockarie, the president of the First Love Society Explains that “Faith means everything to me because without faith, I feel like I can’t do my day-to-day activities but with faith it opens my eyes, gives me vision and hope for a better day”.
Our Pagan Spirit Society explained to us that “Paganism is a really misunderstood umbrella term for a huge collection of nature-based, often polytheistic, faiths from across the world! It means so much to our society to unite people who look to ancient faiths for guidance, as well as practitioners of witchcraft and anyone who labels themselves as ‘spiritual’”. Our space will provide an inclusive and accepting environment for all faiths and beliefs, and aim to encourage other students to chat to our faith societies if they wish to leanr more about them, or are interested in joining. We understand that belief comes in all different shapes and sizes, as The Liverpool Jewish Society perfectly explains that "Faith... is a spectrum". To them, "every Jewish person will interpret faith differently.... one aspect that will always remain the same is the pursuit of goodness". This encourages those to explore their beliefs and faith in their own way.
