Did you know that we have over 20 volunteering opportunities to boost your CV, work with companies that are important to you and the community, and help you network with integral people for your personal and professional journey? We're looking for people like you to join one of our volunteering opportunities today!

Alongside our external opportunities, we offer two dedicated schemes within JMSU that help us, students, staff and the wider city of Liverpool! We're going to show you what it's like to be a Sustainability Champion and what being a part of the Buddy Scheme is like, as well as answering some volunteering FAQS to help you on your volunteering journey, whether it's an ongoing one or simply a one-off.

What is the Buddy Scheme?

Our volunteering Buddy Scheme helps pair new LJMU students with returning students based on their likes, desires, interests and preferences so they can get to know the city, make new friends and feel at ease at LJMU. Whether you want a one-off tour guide of the city, or someone to attend an event with, our Buddies are ready for you! If you would like to be a Buddy and make new friends, please get in touch for more information. We are looking for new Buddies in 22/23, so apply today!

What are the Sustainability Champions?

Sustainability is a priorty for both JMSU and LJMU. Our Sustainability Champions help us reach milestones in our journey to becoming more sustainable and eco-friendly. If you are passionate about the environment and are wanting to help tackle the climate change emergency this is the opportunity for you. Join us in restoring community gardens, plant fresh flowers, plants and produce in and around Liverpool, event at the SLB garden! This is a really flexible yet important opportunity and you will be required to do no more than 1/2 hours of volunteering a week. Want to get involved? Get in touch today and apply to be a Sustainability Champion now.

Do I need to have experience before I volunteer at JMSU?

Although some volunteering organisations look for people with previous experience or even just general interest in their field, most organisations' main priority is finding someone confident, reliable and enthusiastic to help them. Each organisation will provide requirements for each opportunity, make sure to check them out before you apply in order to make sure it's the right opportunity for you. Check out Molly's volunteering spotlight, and find out how her passion for working with children got her the opportunity to volunteer with Caudwell Children's Charity.

Will I have enough time to volunteer alongside my studies?

We know how busy student life can get. That's why it's important to us to make sure that our volunteering partners show a commitment to being flexible to your academic and personal schedule. If you don’t have time for a weekly or monthly commitment, check out our one-off opportunities. You will always be able to pause volunteering during exam periods or the holidays, just let us and your organisation know. Check out Bex's volunteering spotlight and find out how she was able to volunteer at Stick n Step alongside doing her PhD in Clinical Biomechanics.

I want to volunteer as a one-off to see if I like it or not - what can I do?

For Freshers 2022, we are looking for current LJMU students and alumni to volunteer with us between a short period in order to help run our fantastic Freshers events, including a massive Freshers Fair at the ACC, direct new students around campus and into halls. All volunteers will get VIP/ early access to our key Freshers events, branded t-shirts, freebies and free food during your volunteering sessions. Volunteering can be a great networking opportunity – as well as giving key employability experience. If you would like to help out with our one-off Freshers opportunity, get in touch today.

Volunteering is a great way to gain important life experiences, make good connections, do good for your communities and help those in need. Don't forget to check out our dedicated Volunteering page to find out more information. We'll always be here to support you in any capacity, and if you have any opportunities you'd like to bring forward please get in touch and we will be happy to accommodate.
