Sustainability Champions

JMSU and LJMU are on a pathway to becoming a leader in sustainability. For this to happen we need students who are enthusiastic about sustainability issues to help improve the environmental impact of our institution. We are looking for Sustainability Champions to help make sustainability a priority for JMSU and LJMU.

What are the JMSU Sustainability Champions?

In February 2020, JMSU and LJMU declared a climate emergency. Not only does this acknowledge the importance of sustainability and the need for immediate change to our environmental impact, but it comes with an extensive action plan for both the SU and the institution.

As always, it is the Students’ Union’s job to amplify the student's voice and ensure that student views across the university are represented. That’s why we are looking for enthusiastic and committed student volunteers who are passionate about environmental issues to help us achieve our climate goals and improve the sustainability of their course.

What do they do?

Our JMSU Sustainability Champions will be responsible for:

  • Forming our Green Council, which consists of meeting once every two months to discuss sustainable solutions.
  • Feeding back to the SU and LJMU on any environmental or green issues on their course or across campus.
  • Coming up with eco-solutions and ways the institution can change for the better.
  • Distributing eco resources and materials throughout their course/building.
  • Working with JMSU on Sustainability Week (organising events, promoting, evaluation).
  • Helping JMSU to achieve our climate goals.

Why should I apply?

As a JMSU Sustainability Champion, you will be providing feedback and ideas to directly improve Sustainability at LJMU.

  • You can make a real tangible positive change to your course and to LJMU!
  • To gain valuable volunteering experience and an online system to log your hours.
  • You receive sustainability training and ongoing support.
  • Eligibility for our volunteer awards.
  • It’s a great way to meet new people and make new friends.
  • You can develop some great skills to put on your CV, such as communication, campaign development, and problem-solving.

How many hours do I need to do?

This is a relaxed volunteering position, where you can put in as many hours as you like. All we ask is that you attend any meetings and have something to contribute. An advised amount would be 1-2 hours per week.
