In 2019 the Liverpool City Region declared a climate emergency. Not long after, JMSU and LJMU followed suit. We are passionate about sustainability and recognise that our actions need to immediately change to ensure a better, environmentally friendly future. Since then, we have continued to work towards an eco-friendlier and more sustainable environment. In 2020, we pledged a 3-year action plan for ways in which we want to make JMSU and LJMU more sustainable.

Now, in 2022 we want to share ways in which JMSU, LJMU and the wider city are doing to continue to take sustainability seriously.

Kensington Clean up Event. In 2021 we got a funding bid approved by Liverpool City Region's Community Environment Fund, which has allowed us to start The Growing Project. These community gardens are open for anyone to enjoy, grow food, get involved, and learn new skills. Join us on Monday at Kensington Fields Community Centre for a clean-up session!  Join us 25th April 2022.

Friendship Bracelet Making Event. Join us in making Eco-friendly friendship bracelets. Eco-friendly kits will be provided in the SLB Activity Space so you can unwind and spread the love of friendship whilst taking part in sustainable activity. Join us 26th April 2022.

Volunteer to be a Sustainability Champion. We are looking for enthusiastic and committed student volunteers who are passionate about environmental issues to help us achieve our climate goals and improve the sustainability of University, and the surrounding city’s life. It’s a great way to be sustainable, meet new friends and put something on your CV.

Eco-friendly catering packaging. LJMU catering services are constantly reviewing and ensuring there is minimal waste in all catering outlets across the University and using as much recyclable packaging as possible.

In the wider community, Liverpool City  want to ensure that our city region will be at the forefront of innovation in sustainable technology and be a zero-carbon city region by 2040 by encouraging greener homes, greener transport, and renewable energy.
