The JMSU Student Officer Team are appalled at the events happening in Ukraine and wish to send a message of solidarity and support to all those impacted both in Ukraine and in the U.K.
Violence is not the answer in any situation and as an organisation that values partnership and peace, respect and equality, this invasion must stop.
We share the statement by the National Union of Students that reminds us that the student movement was set up as a direct response to the First World War with a view to prevent the horrors of war and for the fair and just treatment of all.
We are here to speak up and to support you. If any student needs help, we are here for you alongside the University’s Support and Wellbeing Team.
In solidarity,
JMSU Executive Officer Team

We support NUS’s latest statement:
Today is an incredibly sad day, as Russia has invaded Ukraine and declared war. We at NUS share the sorrow and concern felt by many. The displacement of and violence faced by the Ukrainian people during this time will be great, and the actions taken by Russia are inexcusable. It did not have to come to this, there is no justification for violence and we condemn this act of aggression.
We will be reaching out to our comrades in the Ukranian Association of Students to offer solidarity and support in whatever way we can. We will continue to listen to Ukranian students, both here and in Ukraine, and amplify their needs and concerns in this difficult time. We recognise the very real human impact this war will cause, the fear, death, and displacement, and we share your mourning. We call on our own Government to have compassion and offer support and refuge for those fleeing Ukraine.
We at NUS stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine. We know our history – NUS was born out of a need for international collaboration after the first World War, founded by students who had seen those horrors and wanted to ensure they would never happen again. We urge for the withdrawal of Russian forces and a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
