Student Officer By-Election

In March, JMU students voted for the Student Officer team for 2017/18. There are 4 positions on this team; President, Vice President Activities, Vice President Academic Quality and Vice President Community Engagement.

The candidate elected for Vice President Academic Quality is no longer able to fill the post, so we now have an opening on our Student Officer team for the coming year.

We’re looking for a current JMU student (who would take a year out of studies to fill the role) or any students due to graduate in July to put themselves forward.

What’s the job?

The role of the Vice President Academic Quality is to make sure that JMU students get the best learning experience possible. You will be the main link between students and the university.

Some key parts of the role include:

• Leading on training & getting feedback from Course Reps to take to the university

• Meeting with key staff at the university to ensure student opinions are listened to and acted on

• Leading on any national campaigns relating to education

How do I get the job?

This role is an elected position, so you will need to nominate yourself online, with a manifesto containing 3 things you would work on if you were to be elected (instructions on how to do that here.) The deadline for this is Friday 16 June at 12 midday. Voting will then open to students from Mon 19th June – Wednesday 21st June, after which the winner will be announced. More info on the process here.

What can I run on?

You can run on literally anything to do with your learning experience at LJMU.

Have a think about your own experience and that of your peers – is there anything you think needs addressing?

On a local level, LJMU will be launching their new virtual learning environment to replace Blackboard next year. Working with them to make sure it’s right for students will be key.

On a national level, education funding and the Teaching Excellence Framework are hot topics. More information on these and more national campaigns here.

Remember: you don’t need any specific experience for this role – you just need to demonstrate that you care about making positive change for LJMU students. If elected, you will be fully trained, inducted and supported by our staff team.

If you would like any more information or help, please contact Becci McEvoy at R.McEvoy@ljmu.ac.uk.
