Following a year-long project and external audit, Liverpool John Moores University Students' Union (JMSU) has been awarded 'Very Good' in the Students Organising for Sustainability (SOS)'s 'Green Impact' programme. We are extremely proud to receive this recognition of our hard work to become a more sustainable organisation and ongoing campaign to protect the environment.
This achievement is the result of a lot of hard work this past year, which included various new initiatives, including declaring a Climate Emergency both within JMSU and LJMU, inspiring students to support and develop new green spaces across the city and delivering bespoke sustainability classes to young people with the aim to improve literacy, understanding and awareness of our environment.
Green Impact is a United Nations award-winning programme, delivered by the NUS-founded charity ‘Students Organising for Sustainability’. The programme is designed to support environmentally and sustainable practice within organisations, and we are committed to continuing this journey alongside the university, over 26,000 students in our student community and the wider city region community to deliver on our shared goals of protecting our planet and improving our environmental footprint everywhere possible.
Professor Phil Vickerman, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Initiatives) at LJMU said, “I’m delighted that JMSU has been recognised for its fantastic efforts to be green and sustainable. Everyone in the LJMU community is committed to doing everything we can to protect and improve our environment and promote good practices. Congratulations to everyone involved in securing this well-deserved accreditation for JMSU and I look forward to continuing to work closely on our shared goals of making positive changes to our environment.”
Caitlin Hare, Student Development Co-ordinator (Community & Wellbeing) at JMSU said, “Our hard work doesn't stop here though, as we work towards gaining the 'Excellent' accreditation next year. Our sustainability work both organisationally and personally has only just begun, and we're looking forward to continuing all the exciting initiatives we started this year, expanding and improving them with our student community as we move into our new Student Life building!"
It is with gratitude and thanks to the LCR Community Environment Fund for enabling us to develop three city gardens via our new Growing Project, mobilising students and local people with the knowledge and skills to grow and harvest food for the community, as well as providing a safe space to be close with nature and enhance wellbeing.
We will continue with our missions for long-term change, improving our environment not only on campus but throughout the city region, working towards the combined authority's ambition to become net zero by 2040. We look forward to you joining us on that mission. If you'd like to get involved with any of our projects, campaigns or initiatives, visit our website, or drop us an email at jmsu@ljmu.ac.uk.
