Hi! I’m Lauren, President of LJMU Feminist Society. FemSoc is an all-inclusive society, welcoming people of any sex, gender, or background. We host meetings, socials, general gatherings and often support the wider community with volunteering activities. As a society, we've participated in protests, fundraising events, socials and partnered with charities such as Refugee Women Connect, and hope to continue these activities in the future with new members!
One of the ways in which we help the wider community is provide period packs for Period Project Merseyside at our Period Packing events. They aim to eradicate period poverty which can affect anyone who may struggle to afford/access them, and although creating these period packs do not directly solve the root of the problem, it starts an open conversation about why exactly people may struggle to access period products (lack of funding, scared to ask for them due to the negative stigma around periods).
The Period Packing event was a great success. We had lots of donations, from underwear to pocket tissues, tampons to pads, chocolate to hygiene wipes! These small but essential items will help support someone who is impacted by period poverty. Everyone was eager to volunteer their time to help make each pack with care, as well as writing Christmas cards with best wishes to put inside the packs. We made over 40 packs that Period Project Merseyside will now distribute to homeless charities and organisations.
Donating period products is so important for challenging period poverty and stigma by providing the opportunity to face the issues head on. It keeps the conversation going regarding how accessibility to free period products is integral to so many people across the globe. Political changes are being made, e.g., Scotland have introduced a Free provision policy, ensuring local authorities and education providers to make period products obtainable free of charge for anyone who needs to use them.
FemSoc is a safe environment to ensure a wide range of students who attend feel empowered, build confidence, and support each other. protected. Our meet ups aim to make for a richer discussion that takes into consideration all backgrounds and perspectives. Students who are interested in learning more about feminism and gender equality are invited to join. The meetings range from issues such as gendered violence, pornography & sex work, LGBTQIA+ issues, and representation of women within popular culture. Importantly, we provide this space to make friends, have a laugh, watch documentaries, and engage in meaningful discussion. If you feel passionate about gender equality and want to come and make new friends, this is the society for you.
We look forward to meeting new members and would love to hear your thoughts and opinions in future meetings! We usually meet on Mondays in the Student Life Building at 6pm while socials will be later in the week. Check out our Instagram page for regular updates send us an email to find out more!
