The Joseph Williamson Society is an independent charity operating the Williamson Tunnels Heritage Centre, which is a tourist attraction providing an insight into the fascinating 19th century underground world left by Joseph Williamson.
Eccentric philanthropist, Joseph Williamson employed thousands of local people to create a labyrinth of tunnels in the Edge Hill area of Liverpool in the early 19th century. Williamson died in 1840 leaving behind no maps or documents about the extent of the tunnel network and subsequently they became a landfill site with the tunnels being hidden for many generations. The Heritage Centre opened in 2002 and since then the research and excavations have been undertaken by our enthusiastic team of volunteers and the public can have a tour through the excavated sections.
We recruit volunteers all year round and are looking to expand our team. We are open Friday, Saturday and Sunday 10am-4pm. Our volunteers are involved in all aspects of work including the continuing excavation of the tunnels, leading tours and education workshops for visitors and assisting in the Reception, Café, Charity Shop and Event areas. There is the option to rotate between roles or focus on one area. We ask for a minimum of one day on a regular basis (e.g. weekly, fortnightly, monthly), however, volunteering is flexible around work, study, family and other commitments.
The Williamson Tunnels Heritage Centre is ran by the Joseph Williamson Society. We aim to advance the education of the public in the life and philanthropic achievements of Joseph Williamson and to restore and preserve the tunnels and buildings created by Joseph Williamson for the access and benefit of the public.
Our Volunteer Visitor Guides take visitors on 45 minute tours around part of the excavated tunnel network created by Joseph Williamson in the 19th Century.
