Open Door Charity is one of Merseyside’s most dynamic and progressive independent charities. We deliver a range of award-winning services that improve the wellbeing and mental health of young people and adults, using innovation, arts, and culture as catalysts for change.
We reimagine what mental health support looks, sounds, and feels like for young people in Merseyside and beyond. All our support options are free and without waiting lists. Not only do we create evidence-based programmes that are co-designed with our members, but we develop spaces that young people want to be in and assign each individual with mentors that have similar interests.
Our volunteering options include peer-mentoring through our Bazaar programme (for low mood and anxiety, ages 17-35), which can be done from a minimum commitment of one hour a week with no prior experience. This is a great opportunity to gain experience in mental health support while doing something incredibly rewarding. We also have availability for OOMOO (Children Looked After, 11-18) volunteers, a role that involves providing encouraging and positive support to help OOMOO members engage in activities to benefit their wellbeing, supporting OOMOO staff, and being a positive role model.

Bazaar is an eight-week peer support programme that's shown to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression by blending elements of CBT, mindfulness, and more to control and combat negative thought patterns. Bazaar is always free and without waiting lists, with sessions taking place in-person at the Bloom Building in Birkenhead (near Hamilton Square Station). Our volunteer peer mentors bring the programme to life by guiding members through the content, providing help and guidance, and bringing their own experience into the conversation.
You don't need to be an expert or even have any experience mentoring. You just need to be a good listener and be able to give a minimum of an hour of your time per week. We provide full training for mentors as well as continued support and guidance for as long as you decide to mentor with us. Mentoring with us is an incredibly rewarding opportunity that enables you to make a huge difference to the lives of others. It's also a brilliant way to gain experience delivering mental health support on a 1:1 basis in a safe and supportive environment and offers several exclusive benefits.
