Weightlifting is a dynamic strength sport focused on the explosive power of the snatch and clean & jerk lifts. It’s about precision, technique, and raw strength — pushing your body to lift maximum weights while mastering control and form. Whether you’re training for competition or personal progress, weightlifting builds strength, confidence, and discipline.
Our Weightlifting Club welcomes athletes of all levels — from complete beginners learning the basics to experienced lifters preparing for meets. We offer expert coaching, technique sessions, and supportive training environments to help you reach your goals safely and effectively. More than just lifting weights, we’re a community driven by passion and perseverance. Step onto the platform — it’s more than weightlifting, it’s a way of life.

LJMU Weightlifting is a club built around the Olympic-style lifts: the snatch, and the clean and jerk. Whether you're completely new to weightlifting or already an experienced lifter, our aim is to provide a supportive, safe, and challenging environment for everyone. We’re committed to growing a strong university weightlifting team and giving students the chance to train and compete at both local and national levels, including the British University Championships. With expert coaching and a tight-knit community, we’re here to help you improve, lift heavier, and enjoy the process.
Our main coached sessions take place at Taylor Strength Training, just a 13-minute walk from the Student Life Building. These sessions are led by a British Weightlifting Level 2 coach with years of experience—who also studied at LJMU. Alongside our weekly coached training, we also host informal drop-in sessions for members to follow their own programmes. We encourage athletes of all levels to get involved—whether that means attending once a week to pick up a new skill, or training regularly to push your limits. Our club regularly enters competitions across Liverpool and the UK, including prestigious events like the British and English Championships. Join our WhatsApp group to stay in the loop with training times, competitions, and socials.
This club is perfect if you want to learn how to lift properly, gain strength, improve your discipline, and join a motivating community. For beginners, it’s a chance to build a solid foundation under the guidance of expert coaches. For experienced lifters, we offer opportunities to refine your technique, compete, and progress. More than just a sport, weightlifting builds mental toughness, confidence, and camaraderie. You don’t need to be the strongest person in the room—just someone willing to turn up, put in the work, and enjoy the journey.
Each sports club is led by a student committee responsible for running the club, organising activities, and representing members. The committee is chaired by the Club Captain, with support from other elected roles.
