Maths Society @ LJMU
Going to university is a big step for anyone! Students up and down the country move far and wide to study something new or progress further in a topic they are passionate about. Not only is there the studying to worry about but also moving into a new flat with a whole bunch of strangers. What can help is connecting with people with the same interests as you? That’s where societies come in!
As maths freshers starting last year, we had the same problems as many students across the planet in which that all our learning was online. Not only did you have the prospect of starting a new step of education without stepping foot into a university building, but you also had to contend with looking at a sea of empty squares on zoom during lectures. It made making friends a lot harder. Sadly, last year there wasn’t a maths society that met regularly which made it difficult to connect with our peers both in 1st year and above. So, when given the opportunity to kick start the maths society we jumped at the chance!
Now we could support our fellow maths students and other number enthusiasts over the coming year, and hopefully, create a society that will help freshers for years to come.
Maths does have a bit of a reputation for being a tough subject. If I had a pound for every time a person pulled a face after I mention the word maths, I’d rely on my student loan a little less. Even with great support from our lecturers last year, academic support from my peers was something I really missed. One of the main focuses for the society this year is to build academic support; hopefully meeting once or twice a week to offer help and give resources.
Not only will these meetings provide access to academic support but also provide some much-needed social life that we are all craving. With plans to organise some fun activities such as quizzes, and socials to better connect with people, we hope that anyone interested in maths from across LJMU will get involved.
To kick off this year we have organised a little competition. Take a picture of yourself with a maths-related item and our favourite will win a voucher! We have plans for a few competitions this term so stay tuned and you might win something
With big ideas for this year, we hope that you would be interested in joining the maths society. We will be at the freshers fair so come on down to see what we have to offer. Whether a fan of linear algebra or if you just enjoy a bit of countdown we hope to meet you soon
