Join the LJMU Hiking club for an exhilarating day on Saturday 10 May 2025, as we tackle one of the Lake District’s most iconic ridges, scrambling up Striding Edge to the summit of Helvellyn! This adventure is perfect for those who relish a touch of exposure and a real sense of achievement as you traverse the narrow, rocky arete with spectacular views at every turn.
Meeting & Departure
– Date & Time: Saturday, 10 May 2025 – depart at 06:15 AM sharp
– Meeting Point: Main entrance of the World Museum
– Return: Expect to be back in Liverpool by early evening (traffic permitting)
Route Overview
We’ll drive together to Glenridding, arriving mid-morning, and begin our ascent via the famous Striding Edge. After reaching Helvellyn’s 950m summit, we’ll descend via Swirral Edge and follow a more gradual path back to the valley. Total walking distance is approximately 12 miles with around 2,000 ft of ascent.

Notes & Safety
Striding Edge involves exposed scrambling, please assess your own comfort with heights and rocky terrain. The weather in the fells can change quickly; if conditions look unsafe on the day, we may opt for an alternate, lower-level route. Full kit checks will be conducted before setting off.
